According to the World Economic Forum, 39 percent of employees’ core skills are expected to change by 2030. While technological expertise remains important, future professionals will increasingly need skills that enable them to collaborate, communicate, adapt, and lead in complex environments.

39 percent of workplace skills will change

Artificial intelligence, digitalization, and technological transformation are reshaping industries and changing the way people work. This development raises a fundamental question: How can education prepare students for jobs that are continuously evolving?

Interdisciplinary Transformation University (IT:U) addresses this challenge by developing new learning environments that combine academic knowledge, interdisciplinary teamwork, coaching, and practical problem solving. In its seventh Future Report 2026, IT:U highlights how students can develop the future skills needed to navigate an increasingly dynamic world of work.

What skills will be needed in the future workplace?

Technical knowledge alone will no longer be sufficient to succeed in a rapidly changing professional environment. Future-ready professionals need a combination of technological understanding and human-centered skills.

Among the most important future skills are:

Collaboration: working effectively in diverse, interdisciplinary teams

Communication: sharing ideas clearly and engaging with different perspectives

Adaptability: responding confidently to change and uncertainty

Leadership: taking responsibility and guiding teams through complex challenges

Problem solving: developing solutions for real-world challenges

How does IT:U prepare students for the future of work?

At IT:U, students in the Interdisciplinary Computing Master’s program begin working on real challenges from science, business, and society from their first semester onwards. Through project-based learning, students collaborate in small, diverse teams and develop solutions to complex problems.

This approach reflects the realities of modern workplaces, where innovation increasingly happens at the intersection of different disciplines. Students from areas such as computer science, engineering, design, medicine, and other fields contribute their perspectives and learn how to work together across traditional boundaries.

“Our Learning Coaches support students throughout their entire studies. The first cohort of our master’s students recently completed their first year, and even at this early stage it is already clear how much they have developed during this time. Students who initially found collaboration challenging are now demonstrating strong interpersonal skills by actively listening, adapting to diverse perspectives, and working productively in teams. These very developments, which cannot be captured in any exam, are the true goal of our work.”

Carla Barreiros, Head of Project Based Learning at IT:U

How do Learning Coaches support future skills development?

A central element of IT:U’s educational model is the role of Learning Coaches. They accompany students throughout their project work and support both team collaboration and individual development.

Unlike traditional mentoring or subject-focused teaching, Learning Coaches do not primarily provide specialist knowledge. Instead, they focus on the learning process itself: helping students reflect on their teamwork, overcome challenges, communicate effectively, and develop strategies for solving problems independently.

These capabilities are becoming increasingly important in a workplace where professionals must continuously learn, collaborate across disciplines, and adapt to new technologies.

Why future-oriented education combines teaching, coaching, and practice

Preparing students for the future of work requires learning environments where they can transform knowledge into practice, explore new ideas, and develop the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines. At IT:U, professors, Lab Experts, and Learning Coaches work together to create such an environment. Professors contribute academic and scientific expertise, while Lab Experts bring hands-on experience from research and industry projects. Learning Coaches support students throughout the process by fostering reflection, teamwork, and personal development.

Together, they connect scientific foundations with practical experience, enabling students to develop both technical competencies and the transferable skills needed in a rapidly changing world. This combination of expert teaching, coaching, and project-based learning prepares graduates to address complex challenges and create solutions in an AI-driven society.

The future of education lies in helping people become lifelong learners who can adapt to continuous change. By combining interdisciplinary learning, real-world projects, and personal development support, IT:U is creating an educational model designed for the demands of tomorrow’s workplace.

Want to learn more or collaborate with IT:U?

Discover the IT:U Future Report and connect with our Outreach & Startups team.

:email

The workplace of the future will require new skills.
