With the constitution of its Board of Trustees, the university has completed the planned transition from its founding governance structure to its new strategic oversight body, as foreseen by the IT:U Law. As of 1 July 2026, the university&#8217;s Board of Trustees has officially assumed its role as IT:U&#8217;s strategic supervisory body, replacing the Founding Convention that guided the university throughout its establishment.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>What is the Board of Trustees?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board of Trustees is responsible for the university&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/it-u.at\/en\/digital-transformation-university\/organization\/\">strategic governance<\/a> and institutional development. Its responsibilities include appointing the President, approving the university&#8217;s statutes, budget and performance agreement, and adopting the curricula that shape IT:U&#8217;s interdisciplinary study programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following members have been appointed:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundeskanzleramt.gv.at\/dam\/jcr:89ac4253-a031-4eef-ab7f-f45f6eab8f58\/58a_1_mrv.pdf\">Federal Government<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Mariana Karepova (Principal Director for European and International Affairs at the European Patent Office)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anna Steiger (Chancellor of the University of Stuttgart)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wolfgang Steiner (Director of the State Parliament and Head of the Constitutional Service Directorate at the Office of the Upper Austrian State Government)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By the University Assembly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/it-u.at\/en\/research\/professors\/yufang-hou\/\">Yufang Hou<\/a> (Professor of Natural Language Processing, IT:U)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/it-u.at\/en\/research\/professors\/christopher-frauenberger\/\">Christopher Frauenberger<\/a> (Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, IT:U)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/it-u.at\/en\/research\/professors\/philipp-wintersberger\/\">Philipp Wintersberger<\/a> (Professor of Intelligent User Interfaces, IT:U)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By the student representation (\u00d6H):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/it-u.at\/en\/persons\/team\/ralf-vetter\/\">Ralf Vetter<\/a> (Chair team student representation, IT:U)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with the IT:U Law, two additional members will be appointed jointly by the existing Board. These members must be internationally recognized scientists or artists with extensive experience in research management, with at least one serving at an institution outside Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-copy-small-font-size\"><em>\u201c<\/em>IT:U dares to rethink the university\u2014interdisciplinary, project-based, at the heart of digital transformation. I am pleased to be part of the first board of trustees following the founding convention and to help shape this development.<em><em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/em> <\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<cite>Mariana Karepova, Member of the Board of Trustees and Principal Director for European and International Affairs at the European Patent Office<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-copy-small-font-size\"><em>\u201c<\/em>With the Board of Trustees, an autonomous body takes on the supervisory function and the responsibility of critically and constructively accompanying the development of IT:U. A young university needs both: freedom to shape itself and clear accountability to science and to the public that supports it.<em><em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/em> <\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Christopher Frauenberger, Member of the Board of Trustees and IT:U Professor of Human-Computer Interaction<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>A new phase for Austria&#8217;s newest public university<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its foundation, IT:U has grown into an international community of more than 250 researchers, educators and professional staff working across disciplines to rethink higher education and digital transformation. The establishment of the Board of Trustees reflects the university&#8217;s transition into its regular governance model and provides the strategic framework for its continued growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IT:U thanks the founding convention as well as everyone who made this development possible through their commitment, trust, and expertise. At the same time, it is aware of the responsibility associated with public funding. The goal of the coming years is to make a visible contribution to Austria\u2019s digital capability: through excellent research, innovative teaching, and the transfer into business and society, both nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The constitution of the Board of Trustees is the first of several milestones planned during IT:U&#8217;s anniversary month, July 2026, highlighting the university&#8217;s continued commitment to innovation in research, education and societal impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:14px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>About the governance transition<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with Section 35 (5) of the IT:U Law (Federal Law Gazette I No. 43\/2024), the mandate of the Founding Convention as the university&#8217;s strategic supervisory body concluded on 30 June 2026. Since 1 July 2026, the Board of Trustees has assumed these responsibilities pursuant to Section 11 of the IT:U Law.
