Description:» Computational thinking «is one of the educational buzzterms that have dominated the discussion about what makes a good computer basic education. The scientific field informatics seems to be happy to have found their assumed» core «in computational thinking. With this on the table, it is time to return to the roots of the discipline and acknowledge the broad interdisciplinary nature of theory and practice of informatics. Ways of thinking in informatics is a novel introductory course for informatics students at TU Wien that tries to fan out the colorful bouquet of interdisciplinary paradigms of informatics, and discuss the principles and benefits—and the perils!–of nine different thinking traditions that contribute to the field. It is mandatory for first-semester informatics students at TU Wien, and has been going on since seven years. The talk discusses the concept, implementation, and reception of this course.

Description:In this position paper, I would like to discuss the work of Günther Anders, a German-Austrian philosopher whose work revolves around the relationships of humans and their tools and technologies. Anders coined the term Promethean Shame to describe a phenomenon he identified in the narratives that humans construct about their technological lifeworlds. More specifically, he observed how humans increasingly measure themselves against the capacities of their machines and consequently feel increasingly insufficient and ashamed for the imperfections that come with being born, rather than being made. While Anders conducted his work at a time where television and the atomic bomb were live-changing inventions, his work is being (re-)discovered, also outside the German speaking world, as it eerily resonates with descriptions of the close entanglements humans have developed with their digital tools today. In this paper I will sketch the notion of the Promethean Shame, discuss possible interpretations for HCI and point to possible implications for the science and the practice of HCI.

Description:When we design technology, we never only design an artefact or a system, but we design a Thing that is constituted in its socio-material and temporal setting. In this talk, my starting point is a philosophical line of thinking that I argue is particularly useful in drawing our attention to this embeddedness. Theories such as Actor-Network Theory (ANT), Agential Realism and Postphenomenology have at their heart a relational ontology that bring human and non-human actors (i.e. people and things) together and orient our analysis towards tracing their interwoven associations. Grounded in examples from my design work I will discuss how such actor-networks can become powerful tools to visualise socio-material relations into which we design technologies. I argue that such a network perspective can actively support the infrastructuring of technology, scoping what we need to be designing. Furthermore, accepting that these actor-networks are not static, but change over time, allows us to trace the temporal aspects of our design practice. While designers, materials and participants might be at the core of an actor network during design-time, the system and its users may be the dominating actors at use-time. This temporal fluidity allows us, to effectively think about what is required to sustain PD efforts after the designers have left. It may further help us to understand better how to design for design-in-use, blurring the boundaries between design and use-time, extending the notion of participation beyond us facilitating it.

Description:The ideal of empowering people was one of the driving forces in developing the concept of Participatory Design and remains a part of the DNA of many efforts in the field. What such empowerment means exactly, however, is often poorly understood. In this talk I start with the notion that (dis)empowerment is an effect that is enacted through a complex interplay between human and non-human actors as parts of deeply interwoven networks. I will use this perspective of a relational ontology, as a theoretical lens to discuss how to conceptualise disabled experiences of disempowerment and exclusion. Grounded in examples from my own work, co-designing technology with autistic children, I aim to show how the relations between people, the material world and other actors such as knowledge or social norms are constituent parts in the enactment of agency and consequently in the ordering of disability. In particular, I will look at the roles of technology in this ordering as an increasingly pervasive and powerful actor in today's world. While I believe that such a relational perspective affords great explanatory power, valuable in its own right, I argue that we also need to develop ways in which we can orient these concepts towards constructively shaping alternative futures. To this end, I will discuss possible pathways for Participatory Design to interpret this line of thinking.

Description:Since 2012 six AAL pilot regions were launched in Austria. The main goal of these pilot regions is to evaluate the impact of AAL technologies in daily use considering the entire value chain. Additionally, go-to market strategies for assistive technologies based on an involvement of all relevant stakeholders are developed. Within this paper an overview of the specific objectives, approaches and the status of all Austrian AAL pilot regions is given. Taking into account the different experiences of the different pilot regions, specific challenges in establishing, implementing and sustaining pilot region projects are discussed and lessons-learned are presented. Results show that a careful planning of all project phases taking into account available resources is crucial for the successful implementation of an AAL pilot region. In particular, this applies to all activities related to the active involvement of end-users.

Description:The Institute for Design & Assessment of Technology (IGW) is part of the Faculty of Informatics at the Vienna University of Technology and is historically comprised of two groups: Multidisciplinary Design and Human Computer Interaction, which also includes the Centre for Applied Assistive Technology. The institute is highly interdisciplinary, within a traditional computer science faculty. Members come from various backgrounds, enabling us to merge technical engineering and social sciences research with people-centred design. The Institute includes 35 employed faculty/researchers/students and over 10 associated PhD students, engaged in 30 projects funded by the EU and national funding agencies, and supported by administrative staff (Fig. 1). The Institute can look back on more than two decades of research about end-users’ participation, acceptance and adoption of new technologies, their motivations and experiences, and about ethics and the social impact of information and communication technologies. Our research is grounded in understanding the challenges of everyday contexts and our contributions are technical, theoretical and practical. We have particular expertise in mobile, tangible and sensor-based technologies and in applying participatory and co-design approaches, with access to cutting-edge technologies, such as eye-trackers, 3D printers, laser cutters and electronics labs. Description:Participatory Design is seen as a particularly valuable approach for creating technology for vulnerable people or people with special needs (eg [13]). The shift away from requirement engineering in this context is driven for both, ideological and pragmatic reasons (compare [8]: ideologically, empowerment is particular relevant with target groups that are typically marginalised. Pragmatically, it is argued that PD is essential when the lived experience of future users is particularly detached from designers, a gap which is particularly wide in the case of people with special needs. Description:Designing technology for children is unlike working with any other user group. It is not just that they have different profiles or preferences, but their whole life works in ways that we adult designers only vaguely remember from a time long gone. The experiences we intend to design are therefore, more often then not, just wild guesses of what could make sense in the lifeworlds of children. The only way around this, is to involve children in design processes and such collaborations are rewarding on multiple levels. There is on the one hand the opportunity for us to understand what children want and how we can go about realising the experiences with technologies that are relevant for them. On the other hand, this is also a chance for us designers to reconnect to a creative potential, to a way of thinking and learning about our environment that can unlock design spaces which have been closed down by growing up. In this keynote I will be discussing the ways in which we can design interactive technologies with children and how this reflects back onto our own design practices. Description:We describe the development of a tool to support the contributions of children with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) in a design critique activity. The work is part of the ECHOES project in which we included children with ASC in a participatory design process to create a technologically enhanced learning environment. We start by discussing the general difficulties of involving children with ASC in participatory design work, particularly a socially demanding activity such as design critique. We then describe how we developed the requirements for a tool to support children with ASC in design critique, the resulting prototype and a pilot study. We discovered that the simple annotator tool served complex interactional needs and supported design critique in unexpected ways, by scaffolding the interaction with the researcher and providing opportunities for emotional self-regulation. After shifting our focus from outcomes only to these interactional aspects, we carried out a study with 7 children with ASC investigating in more depth how the tool supported the children’s participation. We report on the study and our analysis, and discuss the direct and indirect implications this work has had on the ECHOES project and beyond in terms of design outcomes, methodology and contributions to knowledge.© 2013 Elsevier BV All rights reserved.

Description:We present an interdisciplinary methodology for designing interactive multi-modal technology for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In line with many other researchers in the field, we believe that the key to developing technology in this context is to embrace perspectives from diverse disciplines to arrive at a methodology that delivers satisfactory outcomes for all stakeholders. The ECHOES project provided us with the opportunity to develop a technology-enhanced learning (TEL) environment that facilitates acquisition and exploration of social skills by typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). ECHOES’ methodology and the learning environment rely crucially on multi-disciplinary expertise including developmental psychology, visual arts, human–computer interaction, artificial intelligence, education, and several other cognate disciplines. In this article, we reflect on the methods needed to develop a TEL environment for young users with ASDs by identifying key features, benefits, and challenges of this approach.

Description:Children with ASD have difficulty with social communication, particularly joint attention. Interaction in a virtual environment (VE) may be a means for both understanding these difficulties and addressing them. It is first necessary to discover how this population interacts with virtual characters, and whether they can follow joint attention cues in a VE. This paper describes a study in which 32 children with ASD used the ECHOES VE to assist a virtual character in selecting objects by following the character’s gaze and/or pointing. Both accuracy and reaction time data suggest that children were able to successfully complete the task, and qualitative data further suggests that most children perceived the character as an intentional being with relevant, mutually directed behaviour.

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a sonification system, which gives real-time auditory feedback to a performer who is carrying out moves on sports equipment called a German wheel. The system, which is implemented in the programming language SuperCollider, uses a magnetometer to collect data about the motion of the wheel. Parameters of this motion are then transformed into sound to give real-time feedback to the performer. The aim of the project is to examine whether such additional convergent audio feedback can lead to an improved performance of wheel moves. The design and implementation of four different sonification approaches is discussed, two of which were chosen to conduct an exempla study. The study was carried out with a group of seven novices and four experts and shows a significant positive influence of one of the sonifications on the performance of the given task by the experts.

Description:The workshop on Recycling Auditory Displays at ICAD 2008 aimed to capture knowledge about the design of auditory displays from the participants in a manner that would be easy to understand and reuse. The participants introduced themselves by providing examples of a good and a bad sound design. These examples raised issues of culture, identity, aesthetics and context that are more usually associated with product sound design than auditory display. Based on these discussions the themes Users, Applications, Techniques, and Environments were chosen to focus the further development of ideas. A mindmapping session was used to collect over 150 entries under these themes, and more than 30 references. An additional Others theme was needed for ideas that did not fit neatly into the existing categories. The information that has been collected shows that most research in auditory display falls under the themes of Applications and Techniques. The information under the themes of Users and Others shows the overlap with related disciplines such as auditory neuroscience, product design, sound arts, semiotics, and interface design. The Environment theme raised the need for future research to include contextual issues. The outcome of the workshop has been to produce a collaborative understanding of the current state of design knowledge in the Auditory Display community, and to identify future directions for research into the design of Auditory Displays.

Description:This paper introduces a methodological framework for contextual design with patterns (paco). Its development was driven by the lack of guidance in designing audio in the user interface and by the need to communicate design knowledge within the community and to designers outside the field. The fundamental concepts presented in this paper, however, are generic and might be applicable similarly to other disciplines. The framework provides methods to create, apply and refine design patterns considering the particularities of small or pre-mature scientific disciplines which have less successful examples to draw upon-such as auditory display. After providing background on research in auditory display and current design practice, a set of requirements for the framework is developed, an appropriate format for design patterns is discussed and the context space is introduced as a key concept to facilitate the workflow within the framework. An example workflow shows the usage of the framework during the life-cycle of a design pattern and we elaborate on the next steps discussing an online design tool and the evaluation of the framework.

Description:In the interdisciplinary research project SonEnvir, we used sound to perceptualise data stemming from spin models. The advantages herein lie in the possibility of displaying more dimensions than in visual representation on one hand, and in the potential of the human auditory system on the other. Spin models provide an interesting test case for sonification in physics, as they model complex systems that are dynamically evolving and not satisfactorily visualisable. While the theoretical background is largely understood, their phase transitions have been an interesting subject for studies for decades, and results in this field can be applied to many scientific domains. Also, most classical methods of solving spin models rely on mean values, whereas especially at the critical point of phase transition the fluctuations of single spins are their most important feature. We found that sound is an ideal display mode to study these fluctuations and the dynamic evolution of the whole model. Our sonifications allow for identifying the different phases easily, independent of the dimension of the model and the number of spin states. Also one gets a first idea about the order of the phase transition.

The intention for building this prototype was to prove concepts developed to support user interface designers with design patterns in order to create robust and efficient auditory displays. Here, we are concerned with the sonification of quantum-mechanical spectra of baryons, the most fundamental particles of subatomic physics observed in nature. Description:Kitwood’s concept of personhood in dementia, as a morally charged and intersubjective state, profoundly influences dementia care. We review selected papers from the archived Dementia Lab Conferences of 2019, 2021, and 2022 to examine how researchers apply Kitwood’s concept in designing for dementia. Description:The care sector has become one of the test beds for developing robotic technologies, which have been promised to mitigate problems with aging populations and labor shortages. Despite these promises, the practical application of such technologies have been met with limited success. Apart from technical limitations, other challenges exist in the way we approach designing these technologies. Critical to the development in the care sector is understanding the complexity of the contexts, the needs and goals of diverse actors, and how these are socio-materially scaffolded. This paper presents a study conducted at the intersection of a value sensitive design and speculative design to understand these sensitivities. Based on the data collected in interviews (n = 6) and card workshops (n = 6) from care workers and residents in mobile care and care home contexts in Austria, we developed five themes capturing situated practices and understandings of good care as built on trust-developing routines, negotiations between different actors, affective and reciprocal dimension of care, care worker self-care, and material mediations. Subsequently, we created six speculative vignettes which serve as rhetorical devices to emphasize the tensions that arise with any technological intervention entering and reshaping existing care practices and relations. We argue that our approach can support robot designers to develop a rich understanding of the values and tensions in the specific context under study from the before design and development begin.

Description: This paper reports on the evaluation of digital play things that scaffold social play. We have engaged two neurodiverse groups of children in a participatory design process to explore meaningful technologies in their co-located play experiences. The resulting technologies are systems composed of multiple connected artefacts that aim to strike the balance between structure and ambiguity to allow children to interpret social play in their own way, while providing structures that offer a common frame for interaction. We report on the two systems, MusicPads and LightSpaces, and their comparative and participatory evaluation, in which we assessed the impact of these technologies on the playing experience of children, and collected the children’s own reflections. Description: In HCI there have been calls for diversity-driven research and insights into how this may be carried out in practice. One way of conducting diversity-driven HCI research is by doing participatory design. In this paper we contribute with lessons identified from organizing a PD workshop that enabled diverse ways of participating for our participants. Description:The emerging field of human-building interaction (HBI) has its roots in the historical trends of the development of architecture and human-computer interaction (HCI). Advancements in building information modelling (BIM), sensing, and actuation technologies as well as the commodification and miniaturisation of microprocessors over the past two decades are transforming what once were quixotic visions of a cybernetic architecture into reality. This new reality which integrates computation with architecture opens up different kinds of engagements in the ways we design, use, and inhabit our built environments. A question that follows this new reality is: how can we conceptualise human experience in such environments? Thus far, the lived human experience of such interactions has been an overlooked aspect in HBI-related research. In this article, we provide an initial experience framework for HBI underpinned by existing literature from the HCI and architecture domains on the subjective, lived-in experience of architecture and findings derived from a case study of a field-deployed HBI interface. The research objective of our framework is to outline aspects of HBI lived experiences that can be used as guiding lenses for HBI designers and practitioners who wish to design for and assess such experiences.

Illustrating conceptual reflections, it points to possible future directions and novel application areas to mature the field. Computational Empowerment has been conceived as a concern for how children and young people can be empowered to make critical and informed decisions about the role of technology in their lives (Iversen, Smith, & Dindler, 2018). Description:Introduction The design of early childhood education and care facilities faces the double challenge of creating a stimulating environment for young children and a supportive workplace for staff. The existing body of research suggests that placemaking strategies serve both requirements. A promising approach to meet placemaking needs is the participation of future occupants in the building design. Methods We pursued a participatory design study with the community of an Austrian kindergarten aiming to inform the future building renovation. We combined novel cultural fiction probes methods with conventional inquiry methods to gather information from children and teachers about their experience of the built environment. Using thematic and content analyzes we explored placemaking needs from different epistemic perspectives and converged findings through iterative exchange. Results Returns of children and teachers were interconnected and complementary. From a design-oriented perspective, children’s experience of place was relatable to spatial, temporo-spatial, and acoustic qualities as well as control needs. From a human-centered perspective, teachers’ experience of place was relatable to the needs of feeling embedded, protected, enacted, and socially connected. The converged findings revealed dynamic placemaking processes involving the elements of space, time, and control at different levels. Discussion Cross-disciplinary collaboration and research consolidation brought forth valuable insights on supportive structures for both children and teachers, facilitated timely knowledge transfer, and converted into design solutions that …

Description: We present the insights from participatory design work that explores notions of Diversity Computing (DivComp) and how HCI can meaningfully engage with designing technology around diversity without resorting to tokenistic approaches. A future goal overarching the initial findings in this paper is to design technologically mediated, physical spaces (DivComp Spaces) within a school context where children meet, experiment and learn the complex dynamics of othering. Description:Social Robotics is one of the most innovative fields in robotics research. However, the current struggle for an adequate definition of “social robots” leads, ao, to different interpretations for the status of this innovativeness. With respect to the recently emerging idea of a Digital Humanism, these controversies are of importance since the co-creation of social relations between humans and robots directly affects the concept of human-computer co-evolution; and thus the very core of (digital) humanism. Therefore, in this paper we reconstruct important related discourse threads of Robophilosophy conference contributions since 2014 with a particular focus on understanding humanity. Based on this, we confront these systematic scientific insights with the Vienna Manifesto on Digital Humanism and reveal its shortcomings in providing a consistent as well as robust conceptual basis for its own humanistic claims (which we nevertheless support from a more general perspective). By emphasizing inconsistencies in the manifesto, we argue that any kind of humanism, and especially the digital one, requires a careful and methodically reflected conceptual basis in order to not end up fueling systemic problems that the manifesto itself accuses for having made the system failing.

Description:In the light of demographic change, Active and Assisted Living (AAL) technologies promise to support older adults in their everyday lives and promote a self-determined lifestyle. However, empirical evidence for their effectiveness is fragmented and mixed. Thus, literature has called for more rigorous studies – including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) – to investigate the effectiveness of AAL technologies. In this paper, we present findings from a longitudinal RCT over 12 months (N = 150) evaluating an AAL technology that aims to support older adults’ self-determination, social participation, and perceived safety. Description: The effects of social media on our society are heavily researched and discussed, but few insights about the role of aesthetic design therein have been gained to this date, despite research in related areas providing precedent: drawing from existing theory on persuasive design, nudge, dark patterns, and advertising, we suggest the term Aesthetic Design Power to conduct a preliminary critical analysis of the design of four influential social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok) as a foundation for critical discussions about the aesthetic design of social media and its impact. We present salient design attributes and elements shared by these four platforms, speculate about the possible motivations and effects of these design decisions, and argue for an urgent need for further research into, and discussions about, the visual design and connected Aesthetic Design Power of social media.

While historically the Enlightenment has led us to think that mind and matter are strictly separated, postmodern thinking, in particular in the phenomenological tradition, has sought to bring these dualisms down. The embodied understanding of our tool use, most prominently Heidegger’s hammer, was compelling, but it is now that we are surrounded, immersed and embedded in smart, interactive technologies that this intimate entanglement is gaining new qualities which require us to evolve our ways of thinking about the relationships with our (smart) tools. So, this chapter aims to do precisely that; it seeks to develop an argument for re-conceptualizing our relationships with smart everyday things with implications for their design and our use of them. There are three main reasons, I argue, that should motivate us to evolve our thinking about the relationships we have with smart everyday objects. First, the pervasiveness of smart and connected things in our lives is on a steep rise, reaching into almost every corner of modern life. It is anticipated that by 2030, there will be more than 125 billion devices connected to the internet (HIS Markit, 2017), some smarter than others. The extent to which this shapes who we are and what we do makes it paramount to overcome the notion that smart things are just clever tools. In our research project, we co-designed technologies with children in classroom contexts for three years. Description: Social play is a key factor in children’s positive development. Children with different interactional styles, such as neurodivergent children, face challenges to create opportunities for playing with peers to practice and acquire complex social skills, putting their social and emotional wellbeing at risk. We report on the design of social play technologies that aim to scaffold and support, in non-normative ways, co-located play of heterogeneous, neurodiverse groups of children aged 6 to 8. Description: Children and designers have divergent, sometimes contradictory notions of what “design” means. Unrestricted by the lens of adulthood and the shackles of formal creative education, children ask unexpected questions, draw unlikely conclusions, and have a different experience of creation. How do we recognise, address and adapt to these differences of creativity, and how can we successfully draw from them in our design process? In this paper, we describe tensions in participatory design (PD) sessions we have conducted, focusing on the needs and strengths of the children in their role as designers. We inspect the creative experience of diverse children through the creative modes of the Storyteller, the Scientist, the Actor and the Explorer. With these modes, we offer a perspective that enables PD practitioners to facilitate engagements that better support participant’s creative experiences.

Description:Red Cross teamed up with Accenture and a private insurer to produce StoppCorona (participate. roteskreuz. at/stopp-corona/), an app that uses Bluetooth to estimate the distance between two mobile phones and performs a digital handshake if they are close enough. IDs are exchanged, and if someone tests positive, the logs allow the tracing of contacts to contain the spread. The Austrian data-rights NGO epicentre. works has analyzed the app and come to conclusion that it does many things right—it was developed with privacy and security in mind. But no independent audits have yet been conducted, and questions around the involvement of private companies with vested interests are being asked. However, while relatedness has been argued as a key concept of AAL/telecare, it is mostly interpreted as aspects of interpersonal connectedness and feeling of support. Description:Engaging marginalised children, such as disabled children, in Participatory Design (PD) entails particular challenges. The processes can effect social changes by decidedly attending to their lived experience as expertise. However, involving marginalised children in research also requires maintaining a delicate balance between ensuring their right to participation as well as their protection from harm. Description:This article argues that our intimate entanglement with digital technologies is challenging the foundations of current HCI research and practice. Our relationships to virtual realities, artificial intelligence, neuro-implants or pervasive, cyberphysical systems generate ontological uncertainties, epistemological diffusion and ethical conundrums that require us to consider evolving the current research paradigm. Description:Autistic children are increasingly a focus of technology research within the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community. We provide a critical review of the purposes of these technologies and how they discursively conceptualise the agency of autistic children. Through our analysis, we establish six categories of these purposes: behaviour analysis, assistive technologies, education, social skills, therapy and well-being. Further, our discussion of these purposes shows how the technologies embody normative expectations of a neurotypical society, which predominantly views autism as a medical deficit in need of ‘correction’. Autistic children—purportedly the beneficiaries of these technologies—thus become a secondary audience to the largely externally defined purposes. Description:We present Sensorstation, a research product to explore the effect of smart sensors and services on the communal life within a shared apartment. Sensorstation utilizes wireless sensors and a shared output device displaying a steady data stream of sensor based notifications. It was deployed on the kitchen table in a shared apartment for 19 days to enable communal residents to co-design and to co-speculate on smart sensors and services in the context of their shared apartment. We synthesize and interpret findings to illustrate how residents created positive connections between each other, while simultaneously exercising self-monitoring, control over others, and contemplating reward systems and penalties. Description:This paper argues for a future research agenda that re-orients the design of internet-of-things applications, in particular within the Smart City context, with the aim to counter the prevailing technological opportunism that drives innovation in this field. I discuss why participation of stakeholders in the design of such technology is essential, but also needs to evolve to recognise its political dimension. Possible pathways for such a re-politicising of participation in design are discussed with concepts of Agonistic Design, Critical Design and Design in Use. Alongside these methodological concerns, I argue, it is necessary to also rethink our underlying theoretical understanding of the relationship between humans and technology. To reflect the intimate entanglement, I propose to look at post-humanist theories and new materialism. The goal of this position paper is to provoke discussion and critical reflection.

The aim of the 3-year project was to develop digital technology that would holistically respond to the complex life-worlds of autistic children, affording positive experiences that they could share with others. Through a series of long-term participatory design processes, smart objects were developed individually with nine children employing a wide range of different methods (e.g., Co-operative Inquiry, Future Workshops, Fictional Inquiry, Magic Workshops, Drama and Making & Digital Fabrication). In this article are presented the cases of all children worked with and tie them together by a critical reflection across them. Description:In previous work, we have developed the theoretical concept of Critical Experience and the Participatory Evaluation with Autistic ChildrEn (PEACE) method. We grounded both in a series of separate case studies which allowed us to understand how to gather more and richer insights from the children than previously. This is crucial for child-led research projects. In this paper, we present additional cases in more detail which demonstrate the applicability of our concept of Critical Experience on cases in which PEACE was used. This provides new insights into how Critical Experience handles child-led evaluation strategies and how it can be applied and potentially transferred to different contexts, guiding other researchers and practitioners in evaluating participatory processes.

Description:Participatory design (PD) with heterogeneous groups poses particular challenges, requiring spaces in which different agendas or visions can be negotiated. In this paper we report on our PD work with two groups of neurodiverse children to design technologies that support co-located, social play. The heterogeneity in the groups in terms of abilities, conceptions of play, motivations to be involved and individual preferences has challenged us to think of the design process and its outcomes as spaces for continuous negotiation. Drawing on the notion of agonistic PD, we sought not to necessarily reconcile all views, but foster constructive disagreement as a resource for and possible outcome of design. Description:This article examines the educational efficacy of a learning environment in which children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) engage in social interactions with an artificially intelligent (AI) virtual agent and where a human practitioner acts in support of the interactions. A multi-site intervention study in schools across the UK was conducted with 29 children with ASC and learning difficulties, aged 4--14 years old. For reasons related to data completeness and amount of exposure to the AI environment, data for 15 children was included in the analysis. The analysis revealed a significant increase in the proportion of social responses made by ASC children to human practitioners. The number of initiations made to human practitioners and to the virtual agent by the ASC children also increased numerically over the course of the sessions. Description:When the creators of new technologies are similar to each other, they may build devices and software that serve to meet only their needs and not the needs of diverse users. This means that concepts such as accessibility, equality, and cultural sensitivity are tackled as an afterthought, rather than being fundamental in the design process. One solution is to cultivate greater diversity within the team, so technologists are forced to confront and resolve the problems posed by diverse needs and perspectives from the outset. However, we argue that this solution alone is inadequate. Description:Marginalised children are uniquely vulnerable within western societies. Conducting participatory design research with them comes with particular ethical challenges, some of which we illustrate in this paper. Through several examples across two different participatory design projects (one with autistic children, another with visually impaired children), we reflect on the often overlooked tensions on the level of micro-ethics. We argue we are often required to rely on multiple moral frames of references. We discuss issues that the immediate interaction between researchers and marginalised children in participatory projects can bring and offer an understanding of how micro-ethics manifest in these collaborations. We contribute to a theoretical exploration of ethical encounters based on empirical grounds, which can guide other researchers in their participatory endeavours.

In response, we argue through three lenses: scale, dialectics, and affect in PD, and suggest some pathways to build bridges, foster alliances, and evolve PD practice to proliferate the democratisation in technology design that has been a strong value driving PD. Description:Participatory Design (PD) has become a standard methodology in HCI, however, the evaluation of the outcomes of participatory processes is often exclusively driven by researcher defined measures of success. Through our work with autistic children, who have radically different life worlds from our own, it became evident that their criteria for the success of a project are most likely also very different. In order to address the limitations of researcher defined and led evaluations in this context, we developed an approach for participatory evaluation called PEACE (Participatory Evaluation with Autistic ChildrEn). Using this approach, we were able to include autistic children in dedicated evaluation phases through the co-definition of goals and methods, joint processes of data gathering and the co-interpretation of results. Description:Capturing and describing the multi-faceted experiences autistic children have with technologies provides a unique research challenge. Approaches based on pragmatist notions of experience, which mostly rely on empathy, are particularly limited if used alone. To address this we have developed an approach that combines Actor-Network Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis. Drawing on this approach, we discuss the experiences autistic children had with technologies resulting from the collaborative design process in the OutsideTheBox project. We construct a holistic picture of the experience by drawing on diverse data sources ranging from interviews to log-data, and most importantly, the first-hand perspective of autistic children. In four case studies, we demonstrate how this approach allowed us to develop unique individual and structural insights into the experiences of autistic children with technology.

Description:Designing for reflection is becoming an increasingly important part of many HCI systems in a wide range of application domains. However, there is a gap in our understanding of how the process of reflection can be supported through technology. In fact, an implicit assumption in the majority of existing work is that, just by providing access to well-selected data, in-depth reflection can and will occur. To counter this view, we draw on Schön's notion of reflective practicum and apply it as a sensitising concept to identify the complex interplay of factors that support transformative reflection in the context of two social-emotional learning (SEL) studies. The results highlight the need to carefully scaffold the process of reflection, rather than simply assume that the capability to reflect is a broadly available trait to be 'triggered' through data. Description:Experiences of autistic children with technology are often assessed by neurotypical researchers, although their perceptual and sense-making processes differ fundamentally. Empathy, as the underlying mechanism to infer another person’s experience, is of limited use in cases where life-worlds radically diverge. The same holds true for indirect assessments, e.g., through contextual information, observations, or parent or carer interviews. It is poorly defined what constitutes a positive experience for autistic children and how an allistic society can meet them halfway in establishing one. Description:Participatory Design has developed methods that empower people with impairments to actively take part in the design process. Many designed artifacts for this target group likewise aim to empower their users in daily life. In this workshop, we share and relate best practices of both empowering methods and empowering designs. Description:Participatory design is inherently concerned with creatively inventing alternative futures. From this perspective we argue that facilitating meaningful participation is configuring processes that allow for the unfolding of creative potentials of participants. To this end, we have developed the concept of "Handlungsspielraum" -- the conceptual creative space in which participants and designers collaborate, exploring unique pathways by balancing given structures and freedoms in order to creatively think about the design at hand. Beyond the theoretical value of this perspective, we have found the concept to be a powerful, practical tool which allows designers to plan, conduct and reflect on co-design activities. Description:Technologies designed for people with autism are often focused on their particular functional limitations. We argue that this ignores a rich design space in which technologies could play more meaningful and multi-faceted roles in the complex life-worlds of people with autism. This one-day workshop will explore how to go beyond technologies that narrowly focus on concepts of assistance or intervention. We specifically ask a) how autism is conceptualised as a disability and how this impacts on possible roles of technologies, b) how to unlock novel design spaces methodologically and c) how to evaluate the experiences of people with autism with technology. As an outcome, we will collaboratively develop a manifesto to draw attention to the gap we have identified and develop a research agenda to address it.

Description:This paper describes the design work being conducted as part of the OutsideTheBox project. Within the time-frame of eight months, we engaged four children with autism in a participatory design process to develop their own smart object. We re-interpreted Future Workshops and Co-operative Inquiry to demonstrate that a) autistic children can lead processes with a deliberately open design brief and b) this leads us to explore design spaces that are un-imaginable for neuro-typical, adult designers. To capture these four design cases, we have developed Design Exposes, a concept that is inspired by annotated portfolios and Actor-Network Theory. Description:With few exceptions, technology for autistic children tends to be focused on the regulation of perceived deficits. With OutsideTheBox we focus on the strengths of the children as design partners and created in our first year four technological objects together with them. They all have common that they are embedded in the children's lives and share some degree of embodied interaction. We present a case study along with four objects, two of them with wearable components, two of them focused at sharing experiences in an embodied mode. This opens up the argument not only for more design actually led by autistic children, but also for companion technologies that embody situatedness. Such technologies are then not driven by an outsider's perspective of what an autistic child needs, but rather are intrinsically valuable to them as a user.

Description:Assistive technology (AT) as a field explores the design, use and evaluation of computing technology that aims to benefit people with disabilities. The majority of the work consequently takes the functional needs of people with disabilities as starting point and matches those with technological opportunity spaces. With this paper, we argue that the underlying philosophical position implied in this approach can be seen as reductionist as the disabled experience is arguably richer and often more complex as can be projected from the functional limitations of people. Description:The field of Participatory Design (PD) has greatly diversified and we see a broad spectrum of approaches and methodologies emerging. However, to foster its role in designing future interactive technologies, a discussion about accountability and rigour across this spectrum is needed. Rejecting the traditional, positivistic framework, we take inspiration from related fields such as Design Research and Action Research to develop interpretations of these concepts that are rooted in PD׳s own belief system. We argue that unlike in other fields, accountability and rigour are nuanced concepts that are delivered through debate, critique and reflection. A key prerequisite for having such debates is the availability of a language that allows designers, researchers and practitioners to construct solid arguments about the appropriateness of their stances, choices and judgements. Description:We describe the development of a tool to support the contributions of children with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) in a design critique activity. The work is part of the ECHOES project in which we included children with ASC in a participatory design process to create a technologically enhanced learning environment. We start by discussing the general difficulties of involving children with ASC in participatory design work, particularly a socially demanding activity such as design critique. We then describe how we developed the requirements for a tool to support children with ASC in design critique, the resulting prototype and a pilot study. We discovered that the simple annotator tool served complex interactional needs and supported design critique in unexpected ways, by scaffolding the interaction with the researcher and providing opportunities for emotional self-regulation. Description:In this paper we discuss participatory approaches to designing interactive technologies for children with disabilities. While participatory design (PD) has been increasingly influential in the field of Human-Computer Interaction as a whole, applying its methods and theories to children with disabilities raises challenges specific to this target group and poses more fundamental questions about the limits of PD. We will first build the underlying argument of why we believe PD is particularly important when designing for children with disabilities, before discussing the challenges and opportunities that come with implementing PD in this context. We ground this discussion in our own experiences with developing a learning environment for children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC). We then consider future perspectives and develop research questions by reflecting on our experiences.

We identify the driving research directions, and their associated challenges, from three broad perspectives that shape TEL: pedagogical foundations, technology and learner involvement in the design process. We further explore these challenges through the discussion of ECHOES, an example state-of-the-art system. The review assists researchers working in multi-disciplinary teams to identify the new directions that are shaping state-ofthe-art in order to drive successful future research projects in this area.

Description:The philosophical discipline of phenomenology provides the designer with a framework for studying user experience by affording an intrinsically contextual view of the way we interact with things around us. In this paper we argue that phenomenology also plays a critical role in participatory design when it is undertaken as an interpretive and generative process, mindful of end user experience rather than directed toward the specification of outcomes. We will illustrate this notion through our participatory design work for ECHOES -- a multi-disciplinary research project that aims to create technologically enhanced learning environments for typically developing children and children with high-functioning Autism or Aspergers. We will demonstrate how phenomenological thinking has assisted in the co-creation of ECHOES and has provided a mechanism for interpreting the emergent, creative input from our target population.

Description:The development of social communication skills in children relies on multimodal aspects of communication such as gaze, facial expression, and gesture. We introduce a multimodal learning environment for social skills which uses computer vision to estimate the children's gaze direction, processes gestures from a large multi-touch screen, estimates in real time the affective state of the users, and generates interactive narratives with embodied virtual characters. We also describe how the structure underlying this system is currently being extended into a general framework for the development of interactive multimodal systems.

Description:This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a sonification system, which gives real-time auditory feedback about the rolling motion of sports equipment called German wheel to a performer who is carrying out acrobatic moves on it. We explain the structure and functionality of the sonification system namely the modules for a) data acquisition, which uses a magnetometer to collect data about the wheel’s motion, b) feature extraction, which derives more high level information, such as the location of the wheel, from the collected data and c) the sonification, which produces the acoustic representation. Several sonification approaches are introduced and finally an exemplary study that aims to examine whether such additional convergent audio feedback can lead to an improved performance of wheel moves is presented. 1

Description:We present the evaluation of a methodological design framework that supports expert and novice designers in creating auditory artefacts in human–technology interaction. We first motivate the development of our framework by analysing available guidance and the current practice in the field. Subsequently, we recapitulate on the design of the framework—paco, pattern design in the context space—and present its key concepts and methods. The evaluation of paco aimed to investigate how useful this framework is in a real-world environment. Description:The workshop on Recycling Auditory Displays at ICAD 2008 aimed to capture knowledge about the design of auditory displays from the participants in a manner that would be easy to understand and reuse. The participants introduced themselves by providing examples of a good and a bad sound design. These examples raised issues of culture, identity, aesthetics and context that are more usually associated with product sound design than auditory display. Based on these discussions the themes Users, Applications, Techniques, and Environments were chosen to focus the further development of ideas. A mindmapping session was used to collect over 150 entries under these themes, and more than 30 references. An additional Others theme was needed for ideas that did not fit neatly into the existing categories. The information that has been collected shows that most research in auditory display falls under the themes of Applications and Techniques. The information under the themes of Users and Others shows the overlap with related disciplines such as auditory neuroscience, product design, sound arts, semiotics, and interface design. The Environment theme raised the need for future research to include contextual issues. The outcome of the workshop has been to produce a collaborative understanding of the current state of design knowledge in the Auditory Display community, and to identify future directions for research into the design of Auditory Displays.

Description:Auditory interfaces are bidirectional, communicative connections between two systems—typically a human user and a technical product. The side toward the machine involves machine listening, speech recognition, and dialog systems. The side toward the human uses auditory displays. These can use speech or primarily nonspeech audio to convey information. This chapter will focus on the nonspeech audio used to display information, although in the last section of the chapter, some intriguing previews into possible nonspeech audio-receptive interfaces will be presented. Auditory displays are not new and have been used as alarms, for communication, and as feedback tools for many decades. Indeed, in the mid-1800s an auditory display using Morse code and the telegraph ushered in the field of telecommunications. As technology has improved, it has become easier to create auditory displays. Thus, the use of this technology to present information to users has become commonplace, with applications ranging from computers to crosswalk signals (Brewster, 1994; Massof, 2003). This same improvement in technology has coincidentally increased the need for auditory displays. Some of the needs that can be met through auditory displays include (1) presenting information to visually impaired people,(2) providing an additional information channel for people whose eyes are busy attending to a different task,(3) alerting people to error or emergency states of a system, and (4) providing information via devices with small screens such as PDAs or cell phones that have a limited ability to display visual information. Description:The current practice of designing the auditory mode in the user interface is poorly understood. In this survey, we aim at revealing the common understanding of the role of audio in human-computer interaction and how designers approach design tasks involving audio. We investigate which guidelines and principles participants use in their designs and which guidance is needed to improve the quality of auditory design. The responses are analysed and interpreted by quantitative and qualitative methods. The 86 participants enabled us to draw a relatively accurate picture of how the field is perceived and helped to identify problems in the design of efficient audio in the user interface. The results of the survey are subsequently developed into requirements for a methodological design framework, with the aim to provide easily accessible guidance for designers to integrate audio in the user interface.

Description:The design of auditory displays suffers from the lack of re-usable design knowledge, leading to ad-hoc solutions and inappropriate use of sound in human-computer interaction. We propose to tackle this problem by employing design patterns to capture design knowledge and make it available for designers of auditory displays to share and re-use solutions. In this paper we describe how we designed auditory menus by using design patterns which were developed for a prior prototype and refined according to the results of the prior evaluation test. The resulting auditory display employs 3D virtual audio environments with concurrent audio streams and was tested against state-of-the-art screenreader technology. The evaluation showed that flaws identified in the prior prototype were eliminated, but despite the improved naturalness the performance was only marginally better than with the screenreader. The patterns originated from graphical pattern sets and the auditory design is still an ad-hoc solution. The requirements for a general framework to capture good practice, coding of valid design knowledge and applying patterns to design problems are discussed.

Description:The need for alternative interaction modalities emerges from the change in requirements of users and technology alike. Pervasive and ubiquitous computing as well as the mobility of users demands methods that exploit all channels of interaction. The efficient use of audio in human-technology interaction can benefit usability and accessibility, but the lack of design guidelines most often leads to ad-hoc solutions and inappropriate use of audio. My work aims at developing a framework that allows for capturing valid design knowledge and making it available to user interface designers to create better auditory displays more effectively. The proposed approach is based on design patterns to share, re-use and transfer auditory design knowledge among designers. A method is developed to create valid patterns from common practice, individual experience and related disciplines like graphical design. To avoid auditory design being over-influenced by predominating visual concepts, our implementation of pattern design uses abstract and mode independent descriptions of user interfaces as the starting point. Guidance for the creation of concrete artefacts is subsequently derived from this description and tailored specifically to the auditory domain. My work addresses the need for guidance in the process of auditory display design and intends to bridge the gap between the existing design knowledge in the field and its application. Description:This paper proposes an approach for cross-modal user interface design using interaction patterns. A meta-domain is introduced in which the user interface can be designed without the determination of its realisation in a particular interaction domain. When fully described in the meta-domain, the user interface can be realised in different domains (visual, auditory, tactile etc) exploiting the strengths of each different mode to its maximum. The paper proposes a set of interaction patterns along with visual and auditory realisations. To prove the concept, a prototype was designed for a real-world application, Microsoft Explorer. An auditory display prototype was developed making extensive use of virtual audio environments for non-visual visualisation of objects in the Explorer interface, taking advantage of a spatial layout. The prototype was evaluated with visually impaired, blind and sighted computer users.

Description:This paper proposes the use of interaction patterns in the design process of auditory displays in human-computer interaction. To avoid introducing visual concepts in auditory design, a common ground for developing user interfaces without determining their means of representation is proposed. This meta domain allows for the design of user interfaces which can be equally realised in different interaction modalities or multi-modal settings. Although this work focuses on the auditory domain the concept shown is developed keeping in mind that it should be equally applicable in other modalities. A set of mode independent interaction patterns for design in the meta domain are introduced along with their transformation into the auditory domain. A real world application was chosen to evaluate the approach. MS Explorer was analysed, described through the mode independent interaction patterns and transformed into the auditory domain making extensive use of 3D audio rendering techniques. The result, a virtual audio reality version of a file manager, was evaluated with normally sighted persons as well as visually impaired and blind participants showing the feasibility and usability of the approach.

Description:This paper describes the second phase in a project exploring the application of sonification to improve the accessibility of spreadsheets. The principal target population of the study has been visually impaired users, though the approach has potential in a range of other application areas, such as the eyes-free monitoring of large data spaces, or to preserve screen space in mobile use. The paper begins by examining previous sonification research relevant to the auditory display of spreadsheets, before briefly reviewing the results and requirements arising from the first phase of this project. Phase 2 of the project began with a more detailed requirement investigation, the results of which are outlined. In particular, the requirement for increased interactivity is examined. The way in which these requirements are realised in a further prototype are described, and the results of evaluations of this second prototype discussed.

Description:This paper presents the work on a prototype spatial auditory display. Using high-definition audio rendering a sample application was presented to a mixed group of users with visual disabilities and normal sighted users. The evaluation of the prototype provided insights into how effective spatial presentation of sound can be in terms of human-computer interaction (HCI). It showed that typical applications with the most common interaction tasks like menus, text input and dialogs can be presented very effectively using spatial audio. It also revealed that there is no significant difference in effectiveness between normal sighted and visually impaired users. We believe that spatial auditory displays are capable to provide the visually impaired and blind access to modern information technologies in a more efficient way than common technologies and that they will be inevitable for multimodal displays in future applications.

It combines state-of-the-art Internet tools for information exchange and collaboration with multimedia real-time processing and virtual concert simulations for the exploration of pieces of electronic music and their interpretations. With the integration of eduPlone the IAEM system provides an easy to use platform for lecturers in which reusable learning elements can be incorporated into learning sequences for online courses. All elements are standard compliant according the IMS Global Learning Consortium which is considered to be the most wide spread standard for eLearning content. The unique character of electronic music as eLearning content is considered by the development of the internet Audio Rendering System (iARS). iARS is a browser plugin based on the well established computer music program Pure Data (by Miller Puckette) allowing users to interactively apply sound processing on online music streams. This opens new possibilities in music education like online courses for spatial audio mixing or sound restoration. iARS in combination with the extensive library of electronic music and the possibilities of eduPlone learning sequences will have great impact on the way courses can be organised at music universities. Description:This paper describes a design approach for creating generic computer user interfaces with spatial auditory displays. It proposes a structured depiction process from formulating mode independent descriptions of user interfaces (UIs), to audio rendering methods for virtual environments. As the key step in the process a semantic taxonomy of user interface content is proposed. Finding semantic classifications of UI entities corresponding to properties of auditory objects is the ultimate goal. We beleive that this abstract approach detaches the process from visual paradigms and will reveal valuable insights into the representation of user interfaces in the auditory domain. Possible ways of accessing operating systems for UI information are discussed along with an overview over common accessibility interfaces. Critical aspects are highlighted for the composition of auditory UI entities in spatial environments and state-of-the-art techniques are presented for the creation of 3D audio. Besides some possible fields of application, relevant utility and usability engineering aspects are discussed.

Description:This paper proposes a design for a generalized sonification environment (“SonEnvir”) that aims to be flexible, easily extensible, and practically useful for researchers from many scientific domains (target fields) that deal with data analysis and exploration. SonEnvir is intended to allow for very quick development of new sonification designs, based on a library of existing sound processes that have multiple perceptually independent control parameters. By using modular software architecture which decouples components like basic data handling objects, data processing, sound synthesis processes, mappings used, playing approaches, and real-time interaction possibilities, all the individual aspects of one sonification design can easily be reused as starting points for new designs. Prototypes for this sonification environment are being developed on the SuperCollider3 (SC3) and PureData (pd) platforms [1, 2].

Description:Our work is dealing with alternative interaction modes for visually impaired and blind people to use computers. The aim of the proposed approach is to exploit the human hearing capabilities to a better degree than this is done by customary screen-readers. A surrounding, three-dimensional audio interface is potentially increasing the information flow between a computer and the user. This paper presents a virtual audio reality (VAR) system which allows computer users to explore a virtual environment only by their sense of hearing. The used binaural audio rendering implements directional hearing and room acoustics via headphones to provide an authentic simulation of a real room. Users can freely move around using a joystick. The proposed application programming interface (API) is intended to ease the development of user applications for this VAR system. It provides an easy to use C++ interface to the audio rendering layer. The signal processing is performed by a digital signal processor (DSP). Besides the details of the technical realisation, this paper also investigates the user requirements for the target group.

Description:In previous work we made the case for a framework we called In-Action Ethics to address the serious shortcomings anticipatory ethics presents in the context of humancomputer interaction design and research. Building on the work of others (eg,[6, 1]), our aim was to argue for continuous, critical reflection on our actions, so that ethics becomes folded into the practice of HCI work, rather than being a tick-box exercise. By taking part in this workshop, we hope to take this work a step further and discuss possible ways to operationalise it in the context of HCI research projects. We aim to bring a number of early concepts to the table and involve other participants in discussing their potential suitability within their contexts.

Description:With the intimate entanglement of digital technology with humans and their social way of being, computer science has changed. While some of the problems we deal with are (still) well defined and mostly computationally solvable, many problems are now found to be wicked and ill defined. People and technologies are now part of an interwoven socio-material web in which humans are not the only actors anymore. This pervasive complexity raises challenges for computer scientists and technologists that go well beyond of what could be addressed by a traditional understanding of engineering the most efficient computational tools. It requires us to rethink what must be the core competencies of future computer scientists. New skills stemming from the social sciences or philosophy need to complement engineering skills to create digital technologies within lived experiences. With it comes a major shift in responsibility. In a New York Times article, Farhad Manjoo argued why 2017 could be seen as a turning point for big technology companies as they “began to grudgingly accept that they have some responsibility to the offline world.” a Technologists, whether working in dominating corporations, small start-ups, or within academia, can no longer pretend they only solve tech problems. They are required to engage in a moral discourse as most of their products or results are essentially social interventions.

Description:In this position paper, I would like to discuss the work of Günther Anders, a German-Austrian philosopher whose work revolves around the relationships of humans and their tools and technologies. Anders coined the term Promethean Shame to describe a phenomenon he identified in the narratives that humans construct about their technological lifeworlds. More specifically, he observed how humans increasingly measure themselves against the capacities of their machines and consequently feel increasingly insufficient and ashamed for the imperfections that come with being born, rather than being made. While Anders conducted his work at a time where television and the atomic bomb were live-changing inventions, his work is being (re-) discovered, also outside the German speaking world, as it eerily resonates with descriptions of the close entanglements humans have developed with their digital tools today. In this paper I will sketch the notion of the Promethean Shame, discuss possible interpretations for HCI and point to possible implications for the science and the practice of HCI.

The only way around this, is to involve children in design processes and such collaborations are rewarding on multiple levels. Description:The argument for participation of stakeholders in design is functional as much as political and moral. It revolves around building better technologies or services, empowering participants as well as democratising the shaping of future alternatives. Participation, however, is inherently local and situated and a common criticism is that it refuses to be easily transferred between contexts, let alone be generalised. In essence, PD does not scale well. When aiming to convince industry to adopt more participatory practices, the prospect of engaging every user or customer in a design dialogue quickly becomes a repellent. Working with the few when designing for the many brings problems of representation and generalisation. It also systemically undermines the empowerment agenda. One potential solution lies in making the process the product (a potential reason for why so much focus in PD is directed towards methods, see [2]), in the hope that they would proliferate. However, for many stakeholders, in particular businesses, this is at least unusual or not viable. Another approach is to blur the boundaries between design and use time with the aim to extend the co-designing of artefacts beyond the time and place of the design studio [3]. This requires not only that we build opportunity spaces for design-in-use into our designs, but also that we infrastructure them so that people are empowered to explore them. Description:There has always been a trade-off between freedom and protection in the design of interactive systems. At its crudest, this is a question of whether users are allowed the flexibility to do as they like with their tools, to break their nation’s laws and make mistakes (and potentially learn from them), or whether we try to design out the potential for error, deviation and crime and, with it, perhaps, some potential for appropriation and creativity. More often, this choice is seen in terms of security and task efficiency: such as constraining input formats, and, sometimes, commercial imperatives, such as digital rights management to stop copying. As networks become ubiquitous and bring new social arrangements with them, this workshop asks: every time we protect people from the worst that can happen, are we sacrificing anything to do so? Whom are we protecting against what? How much play do we want in the system? And how are users working round restrictions and re-inventing the purpose of systems?

Description:Intuitively, when considering forms of technologically mediated communication, access to the visual channel makes interactional techniques available which are comparable to those used in face to face interaction. However, a common finding in the literature on mediated communication is that, whilst it has proved simple to demonstrate the advantages of face to face interaction when compared to interaction over an audio only link, the same is not true when comparing audio visual technologically mediated communication (we shall refer to this from now on as Video Mediated Communication, or VMC) with an audio only link (Anderson et al, 1997; Heath & Luff, 1997). Further to this, studies have identified that there are significant differences between VMC interaction and face to face interaction (Whittaker, 2003; Heath & Luff, 1991; Vertegaal, 1997), and that crucially this is not due to technical issues; it is not the quality of the visual channel that is the cause for these differences (Whittaker & O’Conail, 1993). We hypothesise that the lack of access to a mutually accessible 3D shared space which we inhabit during face to face interaction contributes significantly when accounting for these differences. By using motion capture techniques available in the Augmented Human Interaction laboratory at Queen Mary, we are able to capture the precise three dimensional coordinates of participants’ bodies. This enables us to study these 3D shared spaces in much more detail than by using approximations from video cameras (see Battersby et al, 2008 for more detail).
