IT:U Open Day Attracts Nearly 500 Visitors
The Open Day at the new public technical university on Friday, March 28, 2025, was a resounding success: nearly 500 visitors explored a new world of learning.
On Friday, March 28, 2025, the IT:U Interdisciplinary Transformation University opened its doors to the public for the very first time during its inaugural Open Day. From 10 AM to 8 PM, nearly 500 visitors took the opportunity to discover Austria’s new public technical university for digital transformation, located in Linz. Among them were high school students, university students, prospective PhD candidates, interested local visitors from Linz, and potential applicants, all eager to learn more about the university’s diverse offerings.
Digital Transformation – Within Reach
For many, the visit began with a guided tour through the university’s facilities, particularly the Learn Labs. Here, guests had the chance to experience and try out firsthand how technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Motion Capture, and Robotics are being used. Visitors also got to know real-life research projects—for example, how robots can support agriculture, how data analysis can contribute to disaster management, or how a VR driving simulator can help improve road safety.
Another highlight was the lecture held by several of the eleven founding professors, who presented the new Master’s program “Interdisciplinary Computing,” set to launch this fall. They introduced the various specialization tracks and subject areas of the program. In the “Project Space,” guests were offered exclusive insights into everyday student life at IT:U. Unlike at many traditional universities, teaching at IT:U is based on project-based and personalized learning. In interdisciplinary small groups, students tackle real-world challenges—supported by Learning Coaches who guide them with both technical and methodological expertise.
Strong Interest, Many Questions
By the end of their visit, guests confirmed their impressions: IT:U is not a conventional university. It deliberately embraces a forward-looking and entirely novel university concept. Its focus on interdisciplinarity fosters collaboration at eye level—something that was palpable throughout the Open Day.
The numerous conversations held between visitors and IT:U representatives at the various information booths proved especially valuable. Here are the most frequently asked questions—and the answers:
When was IT:U founded?
IT:U was launched in September 2023 with its first team members. The new Technical University for Digital Transformation has therefore been active for a year and a half. The first two PhD programs started in fall 2024, and the first Master’s program will begin in the upcoming semester.
Where is IT:U located?
In Linz Auhof, at the Science Park 4 (JKU).
Is IT:U a private university?
No, IT:U is a public university—the 23rd university in Austria.
What is the focus of IT:U?
IT:U is a technical university and Austria’s first interdisciplinary university, combining technology, project-based learning, and global problem-solving.
At IT:U, students with various academic backgrounds come together and receive a broad-based technical education—from Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to Robotics and Augmented Reality. This enables them to transform or expand their own field of study (e.g., biology, psychology, etc.) through technology.
How is learning structured at IT:U?
IT:U emphasizes project-based learning (PBL) in interdisciplinary small groups and Learn Labs. This means students are actively engaged in the learning process, guided by Learning Coaches, and receive additional knowledge through workshops. Creative thinking is always required—for example, instead of being tasked with simply “program the robot,” a challenge might be: “How can a robot be used to collect data on biodiversity?” Students tackle complex, real-world questions and challenges. This highly personalized teaching approach is unique in Austria.
What can you study at IT:U?
- PhD Program: Digital Transformation in Learning – Admission requirement: Master’s degree
