MOMO – Motion & Audio Lab

MOMO Lab provides students with the opportunity to record and analyze the sounds and movements of both individuals and groups. Through project-based learning, they explore motion and audio analysis, transforming insights into innovative solutions across diverse fields.

For us, every lab is more than just a name — it’s a persona. MOMO embodies the essence of motion, audio and technology, believing that human potential is unlocked through movement. She inspires us to analyze and understand motion, sound, and environmental factors to develop impacful solutions.

Hands-on with
Motion & Audio

The lab is equipped with a network of 16 high-resolution cameras connected to a powerful central computer, along with wearable markers, sensors, an Ambisonics sound system, and various other tools designed to bring sensory analysis to life.

Project-based Learning

Imagine a medical student and a mathematician collaborating to develop an app that improves ergonomics for people with movement restrictions through video analysis. Graduates leverage technology to analyze movement and drive innovations in workplace ergonomics, healthcare, and beyond.

Meet the Expert

Meet Rafael Caro Repetto — Senior Lecturer, Researcher & Lab Expert at IT:U. He is an ethnomusicologist specializing in Chinese traditional theatre, with experience in North Indian classical music, Iranian dastgāhi music, and Arab-Andalusian music. His methodology combines ethnographic research with computer-aided music analysis to explore how musical systems are conceptualized and performed.

He is particularly interested in how culture and society influence the formation and transmission of musical traditions and how computational tools can help unfamiliar listeners understand and appreciate them.

At IT:U, his goal is to use motion capture and related technologies to study movement in musical contexts, from fingering in instrument playing to dance. As a lab expert, he looks forward to collaborating on academic projects related to motion and audio analysis.
