AI, Climate Change, and Us
Extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods, wildfires, and storms are increasing worldwide. Climate change is intensifying these natural disasters and poses enormous challenges for societies. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in predicting, analyzing, and managing such crises.
In this interactive workshop, we explore how AI is being used to detect natural disasters at an early stage, better assess risks, and support emergency response and adaptation measures. Using concrete examples—such as weather forecasting, disaster warning systems, and crisis management—we discuss the opportunities AI offers, its limitations, and the ethical and social questions involved.
A key focus is also on our own role: How do human actions, political decisions, and technological developments influence the scale of natural disasters? And how can we use AI responsibly to be better prepared for the impacts of climate change?
The workshop combines short inputs with discussions and invites participants to understand interconnections, reflect critically, and develop their own options for action.
