A New Role for the University

At IT:U, outreach stands alongside research and education as a core mission. We believe universities shouldn’t stay behind closed doors. Through the Digital City Studio, we connect science with everyday life, make our interdisciplinary research visible and useful to citizens, and position Linz as a leader in human-centered digital innovation. It’s a space where dialogue, data, and discovery come together—delivering real impact for individuals and society. It is a prototype for how universities and cities can collaborate to build a more participatory, transparent, and inclusive digital future. It challenges the idea that scientific knowledge should stay on campus, and instead asks: what happens when it enters the public sphere?

Why Linz? Why Now?

Linz has evolved from an industrial hub into a leading city for digital culture, science, and innovation. Internationally recognized — including second place in the European “Capital of Innovation” awards — it leads in areas like climate neutrality and open data. The Digital City Studio strengthens Linz’s role as a living lab, where innovation serves people. By bringing research into the heart of the city, Linz and IT:U affirm that science is for everyone — and transformation is a shared responsibility.

“A key feature of the Digital City Studio is its co-creation approach: workshops are developed together with participants to take their individual interests and needs into account. This not only strengthens identification with the topics, but also makes learning more engaging and sustainable. At the same time, it invites students, teachers, youth groups, and businesses to become part of this innovative educational initiative”.

Bernd Resch, Professor of GeoSocial Al and Initiator of Digital City Studios

“The Digital City Studio brings digital education into everyday life and makes knowledge about new technologies such as artificial intelligence-accessible to everyone. Our goal is to break down barriers, foster dialogue between science and society, and bring interdisciplinary research from IT:U into the public sphere”.
