Research group:

At IT:U, our lab studies (a) how the biological brain’s learning can inspire the design of new AI models, and (b) how we can use AI to understand the brain’s physiology and functions. Specifically, for (a), we will start with neuromodulators such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, and acetylcholine, to investigate how their interactions and dynamics can inspire more flexible and adaptive learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs). This research could lead to smarter, more resilient AI systems. For (b), we are collaborating with researchers around the world, bringing health and disease data from both animals and humans to model how disease states affect cognition and learning.

Short Bio

Jie Mei received her M.S. in cognitive science from École Normale Supérieure in 2015, followed by a Ph.D. in medical neuroscience from Charité – Universitaetsmedizin Berlin in 2019. She then completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Quebec and Western University in Canada. Prior to her appointment at IT:U, Jie was a project assistant professor at the University of Tokyo. Jie’s main research interests are computational neuroscience, neuro-inspired artificial intelligence (AI), brain health, and AI for understanding neuroscience data. At IT:U, Jie will focus on (1) brain-inspired computation and (2) analysis and modelling of multi-scale neuroscience data.
