Beschreibung:This paper introduces queering as a methodological intervention in human–AI entanglements, aimed at pluralizing the self and resisting normative algorithmic logics. Expanding the role of queerness in HCI beyond its traditional associations with gender and sexuality, we conceptualize queering as a relational, performative, and political disturbance that disrupts the interpellative forces of AI systems. Our exploration unfolds through Undoing Gracia, an autotheoretical experiment seeded with the first author’s autobiographical memories and values, in which Grace interacts with two digital twin agents, Lex and Tortugi, within the speculative world of Gracia. This multi-agent simulation probes the algorithmic borderlands of subjectivity, as the self is iteratively co-performed and transformed through interaction with the agents. Beschreibung:Given the current ecological crisis, the HCI and design community is showing a growing interest in the adoption of more-than-human perspectives, challenging human-centric approaches. While this has sparked numerous research initiatives, many of them are still a far cry from providing practical solutions or transforming the industry. This also presents a hurdle for teaching more-than-human perspectives to design students, as they may feel powerless to practice those teachings in real-life industrial settings. To bring forth concrete examples of how more-than-human design practice can matter, we believe that it is now time to move beyond theorising about and advocating for the adoption of such perspectives and start a more-than-human design practice that transforms the industry. Beschreibung:As cities worldwide adopt data-driven approaches to optimize urban forests, computational tools like agent-based models (ABMs) are increasingly popular to simulate forest growth and inform planting decisions. However, ABMs often focus on individual metrics, neglecting forests as interdependent ecosystems. Rooted in anthropocentric ideals, these models risk reducing forests to infrastructures for human benefit, undermining their long-term resilience. This pictorial challenges these limitations by exploring how interface design can transcend reductive, agent-centric representations to foster relational understandings of forest ecosystems as more-than-human bodies. Beschreibung:This paper innovates in the relationship between sustainable technology suppliers and users, using the example of heat pumps. Heat pumps are necessary for energy transitions in Europe. However, in everyday life in households, heat pumps are often not used as the technology developers intended. This discrepancy presents a challenge for heat pump supply-side actors such as manufacturers and resellers. This paper first presents a design perspective on user improvisation and highlights its value for innovation. We synthesized the perspective in a sensitizing video. We then employed this video to engage with nine supply-side professionals in the Dutch heat pump value network and conducted semi-structured interviews with them to understand their responses to improvisation. Beschreibung:The advancements of available generative AI tools have the potential to change the creative processes of writers, artists, programmers, and designers. The Dagstuhl seminar “Augmenting Human Creativity with AI” explored the grand challenges these tools pose to the discipline of Design and human creativity more generally. Over the course of three days, academic researchers and Industry experts from the fields of Human-Computer Interaction, AI, and Design came together to discuss how these technologies challenge accepted ideas of human creativity and what are the implications for the creative class when AI tools are used to augment creativity on a broaderscale. Thediscussionsrevolvedaroundthreecorethemes: criticalevaluationofAI-powered creative tasks, ethical implications of integrating AI into creative processes, focusing on ensuring the responsible and equitable use of these technologies, and the societal impact of delegating creative tasks to AI systems, including the potential consequences for the creative professions and cultural landscape. The seminar’s outcomes articulated a shared research agenda that moves beyond tool-building to focus on the design of infrastructure, practice, and educational frameworks that preserve creative agency and support diverse forms of expression. The seminar produced a collective vision, one that looks beyond building better tools and discusses an agenda towards cultivating the systems, norms, and learning environments needed to keep human creativity at the centre.

Beschreibung:L’intelligenza artificiale sta ridefinendo il concetto di “vivere insieme”, spostando il focus della progettazione oltre l’essere umano e verso una comprensione più ampia delle relazioni tra umani, non umani e agenti artificiali. Questo saggio esplora le implicazioni di un design che abbraccia il paradigma more-than-human, interrogandosi su come l’AI possa generare nuove forme di coesistenza multispecie, trasformare le dinamiche di potere e ridefinire le pratiche progettuali. Attraverso un’analisi critica, il testo mette in discussione i limiti dell’approccio centrato sull’utente e propone un ripensamento del design come pratica ecologica e relazionale. A partire dal lavoro di artisti e designer sperimentali, vengono esplorate modalità di collaborazione con l’AI che vanno oltre l’ottimizzazione tecnica, aprendosi a scenari di co-creazione e mutua trasformazione. Il saggio affronta anche le questioni etiche e politiche emergenti: dall’estrattivismo digitale al rafforzamento dei pregiudizi nei modelli generativi, fino alla costruzione di identità computazionali fluide. Infine, propone una visione del design in cui l’AI non è un semplice strumento, ma un agente con cui dobbiamo imparare a convivere in modo critico e consapevole, per costruire futuri più inclusivi e sostenibili.

Beschreibung:This article presents findings from a Research through Design investigation focusing on a reflexive approach to data curation and the use of generative AI in design and creative practices. Using binary gender categories manifested in children’s toys as a context, we examine three design experiments aimed at probing how designers can cultivate a reflexive human-AI practice to confront and challenge their internalized biases. Our goal is to underscore the intricate interplay between the designer, AI technology, and publicly held imaginaries and to offer an initial set of tactics for how personal biases and societal norms can be illuminated through interactions with AI. Beschreibung:This article explores the intersections and resonances between unmaking and more-than-human design. We begin by aligning unmaking with decentering, a fundamental practice in more-than-human design, through their shared movement and materiality. Using Lindström and Ståhl’s notion of the double movement in un/making, we analyze a series of workshops focused on designing with AI, annotating what was un/made and de/centered during the workshops’ activities. Through this analysis, we introduce two key contributions that highlight some opportunities in the diffractive alignment between unmaking and more-than-human design: firstly, the notion of “unmaking-with” as an emergent concept to describe a posthumanist unmaking practice, and secondly, three decentering tactics—situating, materializing, and enacting—that instantiate this practice through design. Beschreibung:Domestic heating systems need to change to meet climate targets. We draw on practice theoretical concepts to understand what is needed to integrate heat pumps in Dutch households. From a design orientation, we view households as creative actors integrating technologies into daily life. We report on an ethnographic study of the disruptions and resulting reconfigurations that occur when heat pumps are introduced in Dutch households. Our findings reveal a variety of practice reconfigurations around heat pumps. We also find that these reconfigurations are related to and may influence other practices, including professional practices. We discuss our findings in relation to policy, technology development, and design, and conclude that the required reconfigurations in Dutch household practices could be supported, and that innovative practice reconfigurations emerging from internal household dynamics could …

Beschreibung:Rethink Design–A vocabulary for designing with AI addresses the question of how designers can engage with AI. The book presents 17 terms that were developed through inquiries into, and explorations of, designing and living with massively interconnected, potentially autonomous, and seemingly intelligent technologies. Unlike older technologies, these do not wait for human action but engage the world proactively, making decisions, communicating, and sharing data at speeds and scales that challenge comprehension. As such they destabilise and undermine boundaries, often with disregard to moral imperatives, and reconfigure not only the material world but also our relationships with it, with each other, and with ourselves. The terms are organised into 5 sections, each oriented by a key question: How will we craft inclusive human-algorithm relations?, How will we design AI systems that benefit people and the planet?, How will we create equitable socio-economic models in the digital society?, How will we enable public deliberation on data and algorithms?, and How will we prototype responsible data-driven design practices? Taken together the terms provide a sense-making instrument, a map for navigating flexibly a complex, emergent terrain. Reflecting and responding to the dynamism of the field, the book aims to be agile and accessible, offering not the final word but a brief, critical and creative introduction–a set of complementary vistas, entry points, and insights.

Beschreibung: Materiality of artefacts holds the potential to intricately and dynamically shape our daily practices. We posit this capacity can be harnessed in fostering creative unfolding of everyday care practices towards living artefacts. To explore this premise, we designed a cyanobacterial living artefact with air purifying capacity, and invited eight participants to live with and care for it for two weeks. The artefact can be situated in diverse locations within domestic spaces, wherever the participant would consider air purification necessary and certain lighting conditions beneficial for the artefact’s vitality. This versatility is supported by the artefact’s colour-changing, pliable, adhesive, and suspendable nature. We analysed visual documentation and semi-structured interviews of participants’ experiences of the artefact. Beschreibung:This is a critique of how designers deal with temporality in design to speculate about socio-technical futures. The paper unpacks how embedded definitions and assumptions of temporality in current design tools contribute to coloniality in designed futures. Based on this critique, we reject the notion that it is only AI that needs fixing, as design practice becomes implicated in how oppression extends from physical systems to global digital platforms. To make these issues visible, we dissect the Futures Cone model used in speculative design. As an alternative, the paper then presents hauntology as a vocabulary that can aid designers in accommodating pluriversal histories in anticipatory futures and reorienting their speculative tools. However, beneath the surface, the technological infrastructures underlying these interfaces are growing more complex and elusive. This paper draws on theories from human-computer interaction, software studies, and social practice to revisit the notion of the interface as a site of representation and control. By briefly tracing the historical development of digital interfaces, we propose to shift from ideas of representation and control towards a notion of co-performance and negotiation. Through this lens, we reconceptualize the interface as acts of interfacing—a new concept that captures the contested, constructive, and performative character of interaction within large-scale digital systems.

Beschreibung:The field of design is currently undergoing a more-than-human turn. This shift is driven by pressing global challenges such as the climate crisis, alongside the increased agency of technologies in everyday life and a growing interest in advancing inclusive and sustainable agendas. This track invited submissions reporting on practical experiments within this emerging space. The contributions highlight diverse ways in which more-than-human thinking can be enacted across various contexts and emphasize the importance of forging new alliances–between humans and nonhumans, theory and practice, and research and industry. This editorial unpacks the track’s motivation and summarizes the contributions received, examining them through the concept of designing-with. Our discussion expands this concept to include a wide array of more-than-human engagements across three themes: making-with care, thinking-with technologies, and becoming-with multispecies. These themes move the field beyond mere participation of nonhumans in design processes, and towards novel practices of making, thinking, and becoming within human-nonhuman relations.

Beschreibung:The attention to methods is central in design practice. In the context of IASDR 2023 this panel could thus have been suggested within any of the conference tracks. However, we are more specifically addressing the query highlighted in the Changing Communities track:“How can we innovate collaborative processes and codesign knowledge, methods, and tools while considering current socio-technological transformations?” The panel focuses on the evolution and making of new methods, investigating the relationships between theory and practice through the entry point of methods. For example in emerging participatory and collaborative design practices, developing methods for community engagement (Wahlin & Blomkamp, 2022), for making publics (Le Dantec & DiSalvo, 2013; Lindström & Ståhl, 2014) and for creating commons (Bruyns & Kousoulas, 2022) often takes issue with the roles and agencies of design in reimagining and reformulating worldviews, norms, and practices. Generally speaking, developing design methods through experimentation and critical reflection seems essential to design, whether in commercial, public, pedagogical, or research contexts. Despite this, research conversations that explicitly take a starting point from design methods are fairly infrequent nowadays. With this panel, we wish to revisit and reopen conversations on design methods in discussing emerging design practices from points of view that highlight how designing is shaped by methods, and how methods carry ideas about what design and designing could be.

This means that a growing number of residents will be living with automated technology in the home, everyday. But living with smart homes is full of conflicts between what residents find appropriate and what technology does instead. Previous research, centering end-user needs, has often focused on smooth living experiences through graphical user interfaces and improved predictions. In this research, we take the more-than-human lens of co-performance to put crises in everyday practices in view, and to conceptualize a new notion of interface. Beschreibung:Conversation Starters is a series of interactive prototypes that probe how to design explainable interactions with AI in everyday life. Taking a more-than-human approach, we explore how ‘failures’ could be transformed into opportunities for situated understandings of AI. We describe the process of designing fictional artifacts and scenarios about conversational agents that can grow at home. While overall the project suggests that misunderstandings could help people develop sensitivities for knowing when to trust AI systems, the metaphor of ‘growing an AI’ (which positions training as a matter of care), highlights that practices of sharing and experimenting could be valuable starting points for designing explainable and trustworthy interactions with of AI.

Beschreibung:Automated and connected technologies are increasingly present in everyday life. The concept of co-performance offers a new perspective on artificial agency by understanding artifacts as capable of performing everyday practices next to people. In this pictorial we adopt a lens informed by co-performance, and propose the visual vocabulary of the screenplay as a novel way to represent and annotate co-performances. We highlight conflicts and how they are they are resolved through the enactment of new interfaces in-use. We visually represent and annotate scenes found in data from a study of households living with smart technologies. Using this visual vocabulary reveals the role of time, embodiment, character development and more, in the enactment of interfaces.

Beschreibung:Every interaction with an AI-powered device invokes a vast planetary network. Operating on temporal and geographical scales that go beyond humans, Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems pose various societal and environmental challenges. These challenges encompass issues such as the extraction of both human and nonhuman resources and knowledge, and the reproduction of inequalities. To tackle these concerns, scholars in Design and Human-Computer-Interaction emphasize the urgency for designers to cultivate non-anthropocentric approaches. In the pursuit of establishing a non-anthropocentric design practice for AI, this paper adopts a more-than-human orientation in the design of conversational agents (CAs). We start by presenting a series of design experiments, including workshops, videos and performances, that shed light on the anthropocentric biases ingrained in CA interactions. These experiments unveil how CAs are designed to recognize and address only specific human voices and concerns. Building upon these insights, we introduce two outcomes that chart an alternative path–the first involves a collection of interactive prototypes for CAs that are capable of listening and responding to more-than-human “voices” while the second entails a tool to support designers in noticing more-thanhuman entanglements, in the form of a podcast. We conclude by reflecting on how the knowledge gained from our design inquiry can illuminate future design practices and contribute to AI research as a whole.

This paper situates living artefacts at the intersection of the sustainability discourse and more-than-human ontologies, illuminating the unprecedented opportunities that living artefacts present for regenerative ecologies. Informed by an epistemologically pluralist commitment, the critical and sustainable HCI community has introduced a rich vocabulary for decentering humans and carefully involving non-human species (eg, animals, plants, and other living things) in HCI (Aspling et al., 2016; Gough, 2020; Gough et al., 2021; Light et al., 2017; Liu, J. et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019). Maturana in 1997 (Maturana 1997). Animated by a unique combination of scientific rigour and humanistic passion, Metadesign came to me as a vibrant call for a society in which technology should be considered as a medium for creative conversations rather than as a tool for human augmentation. The author’s own PhD on metadesign was completed in 2003, and she uses Maturana’s essay as an aide-memoir for revisiting perennial questions about whether technology can catalyse a humane and creative society. In this personal and reflective essay, the author admires Maturana’s combination of scientific discipline and compassion. She also notes that, at a time when many saw metadesign as a way to design the technologies that would anticipate and meet human needs, Maturana was identifying its poetic, world-making capacity for human transformation. We aim to counteract the phenomenon that access to making (e.g., in makerspaces, fablabs, etc.) is not equally distributed, with certain groups of people being underrepresented (e.g., women*1). After brief introductions from participants and a set of three impulse keynotes, we will envision and “make” interventions together, such as speculative or provocative objects and actions. The workshop takes a constructive stance with the goal to not rest on empirical and theoretical findings or individual experiences, but to translate those into viable interventions. Beschreibung:Along with the increase in average life expectancy, the world’s elderly population is expected to grow to 2.1 billion by 2050. Ageing marks a sensitive and vulnerable period of life, bringing loss of roles and functions and increased dependence on others, often reflected in a decline in quality of life. As everyone experiences ageing, the need to achieve a satisfactory old age for all in the future means that more research and a better systematic understanding of ageing and elder well-being are needed as changing demographics put growing pressure on public health and finance, and the provision of long-term care becomes increasingly inadequate. In this study, we have systematically scoped three streams of literature, design, social studies and digital technology based on Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) methodological framework. With this RSD presentation, we will report on our ongoing work, scoping our research on three core elements: Aging and elder well-being, Community services and AIoT (Artificial intelligence and Internet of Things). Our preliminary review revealed a cluster of ethnographic studies on ‘ageing in place’ in which community services appeared to be of interest. Several survey studies confirm that most elders prefer to receive care from their families rather than in institutions. In a cluster with a systemic lens, community services have been studied to become an increasingly important model of long-term care a few have demonstrated that community services are more effective in supporting elders’ interests and care preferences. Beschreibung:Nowadays, designers deal with increasingly complex and meaningful challenges. Because of that, design schools are required to deliver professional designers capable of handling what future decades might bring. Therefore, resilience, generally described as the process of adapting well in the presence of adversity, makes it a valuable quality future generations of designers could develop. As resilience is still an abstract concept within the education domain, this MSc graduation project aimed to explore how it could be built and enhanced in such context. The approach chosen to tackle that question was initially to analyse the literature regarding resilience. Then, to perform an in-depth autoethnographic study in a moment resilience was systematically present in the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering: the COVID19 lockdowns. Finally, the learnings from that period and previous literature research were synthesized into a theoretical framework that aims to assist educators in conceptualizing interventions to foster resilience in learning systems. This framework was implemented to design and evaluate My Rubric, a co-creative guide for adaptive assessment, which aims to offer a constructive and resilient alternative to the current rubric.

Beschreibung:A key challenge in the design of AI systems is how to support people in understanding them. We address this challenge by positioning explanations in everyday life, within ongoing relations between people and artificial agents. By reorienting explainability through more-than-human design, we call for a new approach that considers both people and artificial agents as active participants in constructing understandings. To articulate such an approach, we first review the assumptions underpinning the premise of explaining AI. We then conceptualize a shift from explanations to shared understandings, which we characterize as situated, dynamic, and performative. We conclude by proposing two design strategies to support shared understandings, ie looking across AI and exposing AI failures. We argue that these strategies can help designers reveal the hidden complexity of AI (eg, positionality and infrastructures), and thus support people in understanding agents' capabilities and limitations in the context of their own lives.

Beschreibung: What if things had a voice? What if we could talk directly to things instead of using a mediating voice interface such as an Alexa or a Google Assistant? In this paper, we share our insights from talking to a pair of boots, a tampon, a perfume bottle, and toilet paper among other everyday things to explore their conversational capabilities. We conducted Thing Interviews using a more-than-human design approach to discover a thing’s perspectives, worldviews and its relations to other humans and nonhumans. Based on our analysis of the speculative conversations, we identified some themes characterizing the emergent qualities of people’s relationships with everyday things. We believe the themes presented in the paper may inspire future research on designing everyday things with conversational capabilities at home.

Beschreibung:The digitalization of society results in challenges and opportunities for learning and education. This paper describes exemplary transformations from current to future practices. It illustrates multi-dimensional aspects of learning which complement and transcend current frameworks of learning focused on schools. While digital technologies are necessary for these transformations, they are not sufficient. The paper briefly illustrates the applicability of the conceptual framework to the COVID-19 pandemic. It concludes that design opportunities and design trade-offs in relation to digital technologies and learning should be explored by envisioning the cultural transformation that are desirable for making learning a part of life.

Beschreibung:Biodesign suggests the integration of living organisms, such as bacteria, algae, fungi, and plants, into design, prevalently as material sources. Designers mobilize livingness of organisms at the design time (eg, their grow-ability into predefined forms, their ability to release colour in growth, etc.), for achieving a minimal ecological footprint and novel material expressions. The design outcome is a non-living artefact with material qualities comparable to the convention (eg, leather-like, foam-like). Livingness, however, can be prolonged to the use time of artefacts so that the design outcomes go beyond being a mere sustainable material alternative or a unique material expression. Instead, within their unusual ways, such artefacts offer novel responsive behaviour and interaction possibilities, and new ways of doing and living, while raising critical questions about care, symbiosis, cohabitation, and adaptation. In this article, we propose the concept of living artefacts, where livingness is understood as a biological, ecological, and experiential phenomenon. To support this understanding, we propose three principles—Living Aesthetics, Mutualistic Care, and Habitabilities—as fundamental loci of designing for livingness. We illustrate the three principles with a number of cases that help articulate a finer-grained understanding of their applicability in biodesign practice.

Beschreibung:A significant portion of academic graduates have difficulty finding a first job after graduation. Research shows that the expectations of academic graduate job seekers and employers do not align and this graduation project confirms that job seekers and employers do not speak the same language. On the one hand, job seekers do not seem very able to communicate their skills and abilities in a convincing manner. On the other hand, employers do not seem very able to communicate the job requirements effectively. In this graduation project, Jeroen ter Haar Romenij validated and developed a vacancy platform in collaboration with the start-up HelloCareer. The platform allows academic graduate job seekers to explore job opportunities with the use of a job task language. With this task-language, HelloCareer aims to bridge the gap between educational study programs and actual job profiles on the labour market. The task language enables job seekers and employers to express their preferences, respectively for a future job and a future employee, in a uniform language, thereby reducing the asymmetry of information between the two parties, ultimately resulting in better matches.

Beschreibung:The definition of materials in design today is more extensive than ever. Designers add computational programmability to conventional materials like wood and plastics to develop material compositions that are more expressive in form and function (Vallgårda & Redström, 2007; Ishii, Lakatos, Bonanni, & Labrune, 2012). They collaborate with micro-organisms, guiding their growth and forging the conditions in which a material can be created (see for an overview, Myers, 2012; Camere & Karana, 2018). Inspired by how a plant root spreads to find light and nutrition, Diana Scherer directs the growth of plant roots to develop textile-like materials with a self-developed technique (Figure 1). The BioLogic project by the MIT Tangible Media Group (Yao et al., 2015) explores responsive clothing, whose dozens of tiny triangular flaps react to heat and humidity due to the trillion or so single-cell organisms embedded into the fabric. In the figure shown here, it is this bacteria that causes the garment to change shape within seconds or even milliseconds in response to humidity (Figure 2). Using a 3D printer with standard hardware, Morphing Matter Lab researchers (Wang et al., 2018) have replaced the machine’s open-source software with code that automatically calculates the print speed and patterns necessary to achieve particular folding angles. Their self-folding plastic objects are the first step toward products, such as flat-pack furniture, which can assume their final shape with the help of a heat gun (Figure 3).

Beschreibung:This paper describes ObjectResponder --- a tool that allows designers to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to rapidly prototype concepts for context-aware intelligent interaction in the wild. To our knowledge, there are currently no available tools for designing and prototyping with AI within the actual context of use. Our application uses Google Cloud Vision to allow designers assigning chat bot-like responses to objects recognized by the smart-phone camera. This enables designers to use object recognition labels as a means to diverge on possible interpretations of the context and start generating ideas that can then be immediately tested and iterated. Initial results suggest that looking at the world from the perspective of the AI may enable designers to balance human and nonhuman biases, enrich a designer's understanding of the context, and open up unexpected directions for idea generation.

Available smart products for older people tend to be developed with narrowly predefined use-scenarios, based on stereotypes of elderly as passive, immobile, and technologically incompetent. As an alternative approach, we created Connected Resources, a family of combinable sensors and actuators for older people that encourages them to negotiate and situate use according to their personal and changing circumstances with a high level of freedom. Beschreibung:This paper suggests robot citizenship as a design perspective for attending to the sociality of humanrobot interactions (HRI) in the near future. First, we review current positions regarding robot citizenship, which we summarize as: human analogy, nonhuman analogy and socio-relationality. Based on this review, we then suggest an understanding of citizenship that stresses the socio-relational implications of the concept, and in particular its potential for rethinking the way we approach the design of robots in practice. We suggest that designing for robot citizenship (in the terms suggested by this paper) has the potential of fostering a shift from a logic of functionality to one of relationality. To illuminate the direction of this shift in design practice, we include and discuss three robot concepts designed to address and rethink present HRI challenges in the urban environment from a relational perspective.

Beschreibung:This article discusses how the artifact of Research through Design (RtD) is changing due to data technology. The article firstly reviews the character and role of the prototype in RtD traditions informed by practices of skillful crafting and industrial design manufacturing. It then describes the move of RtD to data-enabled practices to offer a conceptualization of artifacts as connected things, that is, decentralized objects that actively collapse the division between design participation, user interaction and the creation and distribution of products and services. By considering connected things as capable of ‘making’things too, the article positions the changing character and role of the RtD artifact in relation to three key shifts in design practice:(1) the agential shift towards the inclusion of things as partners in design,(2) the temporal shift towards always available opportunities for co-creation, and (3) the infrastructural shift towards unstable forms of value. The article concludes with a discussion on the implications of these changes for how knowledge might be generated, critiqued and shared in future data-enabled RtD practice.

Beschreibung:What can design do to address adverse life events like childhood cancer? Cancer is not just a health matter—it strains family relationships and profoundly disrupts the stability of everyday routines. In this article, we introduce a socio-ecological perspective that untangles the systemic complexity of the challenges families face when confronted with childhood cancer. We use this lens to identify potential design opportunities for reconfiguring a “new normal” in their lives. We present and discuss the results of a participant observation of childhood cancer survivors at a large support group conference. These findings we analyze and organize into five themes corresponding to specific coping strategies: accepting the transformation of one’s body, avoiding avoidance, maintaining interest in social activities, retaining a sense of belonging to one’s social networks, and dealing with social stigma. Beschreibung:In this pictorial, we illustrate steps towards a novel approach that situates connected technologies for older people as resources. In contrast to mainstream approaches in gerontechnology that consider elderly as frail and passive, we aim to complement older people's vital competences by designing technologies that can be used in less prescriptive, and broader ways. The pictorial describes our design process in which resourceful strategies were identified through thing ethnography and used as inspiration to create a series of new connected objects conceived as resources.

Beschreibung:In the Internet of Things, not only people interact with objects, but also other objects; creating more complex material landscapes [2]. However, many thing-to-thing interactions are currently designed within a simple and linear paradigm: using mobile devices to remotely control connected objects. With these videos, we aim to explore more complex interrelationships, using a thing-centered design perspective in a speculative way. To this end, we position things within entanglements: fluid assemblages formed and dissolved in a situated way. This shows new possibilities for everyday objects to co-perform tasks, and 'carry' information that can be interpreted further as new perspectives are gained through interaction. Additionally, as entanglements implies a complicated relationship, we aim to provoke a reflection on the conflicts that may arise between things, and the implications of them (mis)interpreting our behavior.

Beschreibung:As the material becomes active in disclosing the fullness of its capabilities, the boundaries between human and nonhuman performances are destabilized in productive practices that take their departure from materials. This paper illuminates the embodied crafting of action possibilities in material-driven design (MDD) practices with electroluminescent materials. The paper describes and discusses aspects of the making process of electroluminescent materials in which matter, structure, form, and computation are manipulated to deliberately disrupt the affordance of the material, with the goal to explore unanticipated action possibilities and materialize the performative qualities of the sample. In light of this account, the paper concludes by urging the HCI community to performatively rupture the material, so to be able to act upon it as if it was always unfinished or underdeveloped. Beschreibung:This paper introduces the notion of co-performance, with the aim to offer Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers and practitioners a new perspective on the role of artificial agency in everyday life, from automated systems to autonomous devices. In contrast to 'smartness,' which focuses on a supposed autonomy of artifacts, co-performance considers artifacts as capable of learning and performing next to people. This shifts the locus of design from matters of distributions of agency at design time, to matters of embodied learning in everyday practice for both human and artificial performers. From this perspective, co-performance acknowledges the dynamic differences in capabilities between humans and artifacts, and highlights the fundamentally recursive relation between professional design and use. Beschreibung:Over the last decade, we observe an ever-increasing interest of designers in tinkering and designing (with) new materials (Karana et al., 2015, Rognoli et al., 2015). Designers grow materials from living organisms (Myers, 2012; Collet, 2017), create active composites by embedding electronics into materials (Vallgårda et al, 2016). These emerging materials do not only radically change the role of the designer from a ‘passive recipient’to an ‘active maker’of materials (Myers, 2012; Karana et al., 2015; Rognoli et al., 2015), but also the ways we experience materials in daily artifacts, as alive, active and adaptive more than ever (Karana et al. 2017). We argue that practices with and through these emerging materials both in-design and use-time (Giaccardi and Karana, 2015) offer opportunity for achieving positive social (Drazin & Küchler 2015), environmental, economic and even political change.

Beschreibung:In old age, usually defined as from age 75 onwards, there is an accumulation of diseases and risk factors, the socalled “cumulative complexity”. This complexity makes the care of the geriatric patient a challenge. Multimorbidity, i.e., the co-occurrence of two or more chronic medical conditions in one person, correlates with age, and currently represents the most common “disease pattern” found in older people. Multimorbidity is characterized by complex interactions of co-existing diseases where a medical approach focused on a single disease does not suffice. New models of care for these patients are needed. In this Chapter, we discuss key factors required for integrated care services for geriatric patients, and describe several successful Integrated Care Models as well as the potential role of new information technologies.

Beschreibung:In the city, mobility is calling for new forms of smartness. To understand what is needed to design thoughtful forms of smart mobility, this paper combines thing ethnography and animistic research approaches to reveal the interwoven networks of personal and social relationships that develop around scooters in Taiwanese everyday life. To this end, a three-day study with six different types of scooterists was conducted in Taipei. Cameras and sensors were directly attached to the scooters themselves, to collect data from a 'thing' perspective. The data collected were then organized and offered to professional actors, who were invited to 'speak' on behalf of the scooters. Through the performance of the actors interpreting and empathizing with the scooter's everyday life, intents, expectations and relationships between scooters and scooterists were revealed and captured. Beschreibung:In research on health and wellbeing, resourcefulness is seen as an important skill that can improve quality of life. In design and HCI literature, it has long been acknowledged that resourcefulness is about more than human skills and involves the adaptation, modification and reinvention of technologies in everyday life. In this paper we argue how certain aspects of resourcefulness have so far remained under-theorized, and present a new design perspective on resourcefulness that is grounded in practice theory. In this view, resourcefulness is conceptualised as the dispersed practice of dealing with everyday crises of routine. By elaborating on the complex interplay between means and purpose, we tease out resourcefulness as a practice of reconfiguration. The paper closes by discussing implications of this conceptualisation by zooming in on ways of capturing and designing for resourcefulness.

Beschreibung:Design-based inquiries into the networked products of the Internet of Things (IoT) lack a coherent understanding of the effect of such products on society. This paper proposes a new taxonomy for networked products, which would allow articulation on their current state and future, and provide insights to designers for creating meaningful and aesthetic products of IoT. Central to this framework is the proposition that our current product-scape should be understood as a distribution of material agencies and best analyzed through the metaphor of "agency". We identify three types of agencies, i.e., the Collector, the Actor, and the Creator, and discuss how this approach could create new design methodologies to create more meaningful networked products that would empower people in their everyday lives.

Beschreibung:For a long time, design and research have been regarded as separate endeavors–the former residing in industrial practice and craft, the latter in academic experiments and reflection. In the past decades, as areas such as interaction design and other forms of design were growing their academic basis, became more widespread as subjects taught at universities, and grew a research culture, two things happened. First, doing research became a recognized part of designing products (and later services). Second, design activities, along with designed artifacts, would become established as the chief elements in the process of generating and communicating knowledge. Ever since Frayling’s influential speech (1993, 2015), these two have become referred to as research for design and research through design (RtD), respectively.

Beschreibung:Materials embedded in products behave differently with the passing of time. This can be witnessed either as graceful ageing, or as material degradation. Some materials can appear to be ‘alive’: they can sense and respond, and change state; they can show different ‘faces’ depending on applications and circumstances; they can remain personal and appropriate over time. Materials can reflect fashions in a particular era, or they can exhibit timelessness, for example. Such experiential qualities of materials inevitably affect the way we use, and the time span we possess, everyday products. In this chapter, we propose three strategies, which focus on the potential experiences we have with and through the materials of products that last; these are: (1) embrace imperfection; (2) do it yourself; and (3) multi-situated materials. Beschreibung:'The Internet of Things (IoT) will change everything-including ourselves'(Evans, 2011, p. 2). Thus opens a recent white paper on the emerging capacity of the Internet to connect objects in the physical world to online databases and enable them to collect and exchange data. This chapter reflects on these developments from a heritage perspective and critically discusses how the Internet of Things has begun to change the complex set of memory practices through which we give meaning to the past in the present and thus shape our image of the future. It contributes a critical account of pioneering heritage work from social media to the Internet of Things, with the goal of helping scholars and practitioners frame and design future technologies of memory. To this end, the chapter first considers the ways in which social media enable ordinary people to participate in the construction of cultural memory through shared online activities of collection, preservation, and interpretation. As dis-cussed in Heritage and Social Media (Giaccardi, 2012), social media encourage a shift in heritage work from the mere safeguarding of material artifacts to the grassroots, human practices through which heritage objects are interpreted and valued from online practices of remember-ing together on Facebook to the remix and mash-up of user-generated online content within and beyond the museum exhibit. Beschreibung:This paper presents a novel way of using traces---not as indicators of skillfulness, aging, or evidence of interactions with technological tangible objects. Instead we propose traces as a design approach to reframe technologies in their socio-ecological context: where people, practices, and materials maintain a constant dialogue with one another. Contemporary technologies tend to disengage people from this context and the task the technology performs. This predicament has been referred to as "the device paradigm;" the resolution to which is in illuminating the technology's context by shaping them as "focal things and practices" (FT&P). This paper theorizes how design can frame technologies as FT&P. Our lab is supervised by one full professor (Elisa Giaccardi) and two assistant professors (Marco Rozendaal and Arnold Vermeeren). Currently, the lab includes three Ph. Ds (Holly Robbins, Patrizia D’Olivo, Boudewijn Boon), one new postdoc soon to be hired, and about 20 master’s students working with us on either research projects or graduation projects. With funding from Design United, the platform for design research in the Netherlands, we also have on our team two visiting professors (Chris Speed, Edinburgh University, and Jeroen Raijmakers, Philips Design) collaborating with us on joint research projects.

Beschreibung:A general trend of museums and cultural heritage institutions besides digitizing their collections is to involve the public more and at various levels. Technology plays an increasingly important role in this involvement. Developments we have observed in museum experience design, include trends towards 1) dialogical engagement of the public; 2) addressing crowds as audiences; 3) the use of Internet of Things (IoT) and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) technology in museums; and 4) designing for museum systems and institutional ecologies instead of for individual museums only. In this one-day workshop we especially focus on exploring the implications of museums reaching out to crowds beyond their local communities, and of museums increasingly becoming part of connected museum systems and large institutional ecosystems. Beschreibung:Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting. Beschreibung:This paper discusses an innovative approach to the design of technologies for older people. The approach contains a critique of “gerontechnology” as taking decisions out of the hands of older people and materializing what it means to live healthily and well into “foolproof” designs that easily become inappropriate in the variety of situations in which older people end up using them. The proposed design approach focuses on re-delegating such ethical decisions to the point at which technology is used. It does so by considering technologies as resources that can complement the ageing competences of older people and adapt in a variety of ways. To gain design knowledge of the way existing technologies as well as prototypes function as resources across webs of practices, and the dimensions of ‘openness’ along which they may adapt within such practices, the approach enlists networks of everyday things as co-ethnographers.

Beschreibung:In modern day economy, families often have to be geographically flexible and within families computational technology plays a crucial role in making a home, even when far away from their place of origin. We report on an ethnographic study investigating the role of ICT for connectedness in a family context. In order to understand how families are dealing with relocation in their everyday life, we analyze situated material practices and discuss how expat families create a sense of connectedness through the procurement and maintenance of physical as well as digital artifacts. We show in particular how the roles of virtually procured artifacts, such as movies or music content, is tightly connected to but also different from the tangible ‘stuff’that is a crucial part of home-making. This leads to a different role of ICT in the material fabric of the modern family home and at the same time to new challenges and challenges and potentials whendesigning for connectedness.

In recent years, a growing recognition of objects for understanding human practice and culture has occurred in anthropological and philosophical theorizing (Otto & Smith, 2013). Beschreibung:A growing number of HCI scholars have started to take materiality as an entry point for acquiring a deeper understanding of the possibilities and constraints of design. Steadily moving beyond a distinction between the physical and the digital, a few have also started to look at materials as part of the unfolding of social and cultural practices. Yet, to date, relatively little is known about how these practices develop within the situated experience of materials, and how this situational whole can be supported by design. By contributing to both growing materiality scholarship and emerging practice-oriented approaches in HCI, this paper articulates a framework of materials experience that discusses how materials shape ways of doing and ultimately, practice, and how this is rooted in the experience of those materials.

Beschreibung:In this paper we analyzed a case of designing for persuasive experiences. It concerns designing for the complex persuasive situation of helping parents of hospitalized children take better care of themselves. Our focus was on the experiences, on how these were designed to be persuasive, and on the design process needed to achieve that. We conclude that designing for complex persuasive experiences requires a design approach that allows for designers to gradually develop a rich understanding of the situation and develop empathy for the people they design for. We found that the persuasion should focus on a combination of starting a new practice, sustaining it, starting activities within the practice, and extending the duration of the activities. Beschreibung:This paper describes a framework that supports the physical prototyping of innovative interactive artifacts. Specifically, the framework allows designing, implementing, and testing "social products," that is, physical artifacts able to interact with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and others. Since the target users of the framework are not expert in software programming, an End-User Development (EUD) approach has been adopted, which aims at facilitating the ideation process and providing simple mechanisms for automatic code generation and testing. In response to these concerns, research in HCI and interaction design has for some time focused on bringing the physical and the digital closer together (Wiberg et al. 2012; Giaccardi et al. 2013). Yet, we do not have appropriate concepts to frame what social and ecological role a material object can play in a digital network, or to design the qualities of interaction with a physical artifact that links to social data. Beschreibung:ParticipART is an initiative aimed at exploring participation in interactive works using ubiquitous computing and mixed reality. It supports and analyses work of artists and creative practitioners incorporating or reflecting on participatory processes to support new roles and forms of engagement for art participants. We aim at proposing a space for discussion that can enliven and enrich the dialogue between human-computer interaction and the creative practices. We present several works that have been exhibited and experienced. The works are used to reflect on the different participative strategies and the role of interaction technologies: enabling authorship, affording connectivity, interacting with artificial beings, reinterpreting the visitor world, and engaging in performative acts.

Beschreibung:Due to the increasing sophistication in web technologies, maps can easily be created, modified, and shared. This possibility has popularized the power of maps by enabling people to add and share cartographic content, giving rise to the geospatial web. People are increasingly using web maps to connect with each other and with the urban and natural environment in ways no one had predicted. As a result, web maps are growing into a venue in which knowledge and meanings can be traced and visualized. However, the cartographic semantics of current web mapping services are not designed to elicit and visualize what we call affective meaning. Contributing a new perspective for the geospatial web, the authors argue for affective geographies capable of allowing richer and multiple readings of the same territory. Information and communications technology (ICT) is opening up new ways of experiencing and thinking about heritage by allowing for cross‐media interaction. By combining different media and technologies, cross‐media interaction supports the social production of heritage and creates ‘infrastructures’ that act as places of cultural production and lasting values at the service of a living heritage practice.

Beschreibung:In a world that is not predictable, improvisation and evolution are more than a luxury: they are a necessity. The challenge of design is not a matter of getting rid of the emergent, but rather of making it an opportunity for more creative and more sustainable solutions. User-centered and participatory design approaches have focused primarily on activities taking place at design time. These approaches have not given enough emphasis and they have provided few mechanisms to support systems as living entities that can evolve over time. Metadesign is a unique design approach concerned with opening up solution spaces rather than complete solutions (hence the prefix meta-), and aimed at creating social and technical infrastructures in which new forms of collaborative design can take place. Beschreibung:Due to the widespread availability of web mapping services, Internet users can now contribute cartographic content and easily create, modify, and share geographic maps. Several web mapping services that are currently available enable users to geographically locate text, pictures, and movies on a map and then share them with family, friends, and other interested users. However, few services give emphasis to the importance of sounds in human experience. In addition to contributing to filling an existing gap in collaborative web mapping, the authors argue that using sounds represents a personal and powerful way to remember, re-encounter, and gain new understandings of everyday space-thus facilitating expression and interpretation of personal meanings through richer and more immersive map-based interactions. The paper describes a collaborative mapping system, TheSilence. org, based on Web 2.0 technologies, that enables users to contribute and share sounds. The importance of sounds in collaborative web mapping with respect to multimedia content and immersive map-based interaction is discussed through the results of a pilot study.

Beschreibung:Although creative individuals are often thought of as working in isolation, much of our intelligence and creativity results from interaction with tools and artifacts and from collaborating with other individuals [Csikszentmihalyi, 1996]. Many traditional approaches to creativity, however, have disregarded the importance of social and material surroundings. A richer framework would enable software development, interaction design, and information content researchers and managers to understand the opportunities, challenges and principles of social creativity Social Creativity. As shown by movie directors, champions of sports teams, leading scientists and influential politicians, an individual’s skills and experience can make a huge difference. Individual and social creativity can and need to complement each other. In complex design problems such as urban planning, for example, the difference in knowledge, expertise, and perspectives that exist among individuals provides the ground to collaborate toward more creative and sustainable solutions [Arias et al., 2000]. The same is true for scientific collaboratories [Kouzes et al., 1996], in which computer scientists work with domain specialists to accelerate knowledge development and dissemination, and for creative practices such as art and technology collaboration, the results of which supersede what a single artist or computer scientist could have done in isolation [Candy & Edmonds, 2002; National-Research-Council, 2003]. Beschreibung:Silence of the Lands is a virtual museum of natural quiet in Boulder, Colorado, based on locative and tangible computing. The project promotes a model of virtuality that empowers the active and constructive role of local communities in the interpretation, preservation, and renewal of natural quiet as an important element of the natural heritage. This is accomplished by using sounds as conversation pieces of a social narrative aimed at transforming the virtual museum into an organism linking the people, perspectives, and values that pertain to the specific environmental setting of Boulder, Colorado. The project combines multiple technologies and social practices in a cross-media interaction comprising:(a) data catching (ie capturing sounds from the natural environment);(b) data description (ie mapping the soundscape on the web); and (c) data interpretation (ie creating a shared ideal soundscape in the public space).

Beschreibung:Our research explores meta-design as an innovative framework in the design of an emerging type of software-intensive systems called participative software systems. Beschreibung:The Poietic Generator and Open Studio are examples of interactive art, a form of art intended for the viewer's direct participation. They are based on distributed applications for visual interaction enabling to collaborate on the creation of visual images and narratives. This paper reports the analysis of the visual activity generated by their users. Such an analysis is founded on the phenomenological hypothesis that the visual activity generated by the participants in the Poietic Generator and Open Studio allows the study of the interaction process in terms of a co-determining relationship between perception and action. The results of this analysis indicate five classes of mediators capable of tuning the development of the interaction process according to the context and emotional state of the participants. This is accomplished by using ambient sounds as conversation pieces of a social dialogue aimed at transforming the virtual museum in a place of cultural negotiation; that is, to make the virtual museum a living organism linking the people, visions, interpretations, and values that pertain to a specific environmental setting. The project combines multiple interaction spaces and social practices into a large socio-technical architecture affording:(a) data catching (sound collection and geographic referencing by means of mobile devices);(b) data description (creation and management of individual soundscapes on the Internet); and (c) data interpretation (collaborative production of the ideal soundscape in the public space).

Beschreibung:Our approach to better understand the nature of collaboration in open-source software (OSS) development is to view it as a participative system, where people and artifacts are inter-connected via a computational infrastructure demonstrating a socio-technical system. This paper presents a framework we have developed to describe a participative system, and discusses our hypothesis that the framework is capable of characterizing the evolution of an OSS community through changing the participants' perceived value and types of engagement. We report a preliminary result of our case study on the GIMP development mailing list as an initial step to test this hypothesis.

Although society often thinks of creative individuals as working in isolation, intelligence and creativity result in large part from interaction and collaboration with other individuals. Much human creativity is social, arising from activities that take place in a context in which interaction with other people and the artifacts that embody collective knowledge are essential contributors. Beschreibung:The notion of cultural heritage is in constant evolution. However, rather than competing against popular culture, the imaginative capability of designers should be directed at actualizing previously unimaginable cultural objects and producing meaning for them. By operating at the convergence of art and science, designers should develop ways of empowering the creative relationship among the physical tangibility of cultural objects, their current understanding, and their potential interpretations. This paper presents the design hypothesis of a virtual museum of natural quiet that brings together artists, musicians, interaction designers, software developers, and community experts. By addressing some of the social problems in the definition of policies for the protection and enjoyment of natural heritage, the project “The Silence of the Lands” promotes a model for preservation, experience, and renewal that empowers the active and constructive role of local communities in the process of interpretation of the cultural object. To do so,“The Silence of the Lands” enables people with different, sometimes competing visions to communicate and coordinate their different knowledge and perspectives by using sounds as “conversation pieces”, while collaboratively creating and exploring the soundscape of a natural park or protected area.

Office software, such as the ubiquitous spreadsheet, provides customization facilities, while the growth of the Web has added impetus to end-user scripting for interactive functions in Web sites. In scientific and engineering domains, end users frequently develop complex systems with standard programming languages such as C++ and Java. However, only a minority of users adapt commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software products. Indeed, composing systems from reusable components, such as enterprise resource planing (ERP) systems, defeats most end users who resort to expensive and scarce expert developers for implementation.

Beschreibung:Beginning with a reflection on Roy Ascott’s famous Groundcourse and his turbulent 10-month presidency at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD) in 1971-72,* this panel examines what it means to engage in radical pedagogies in art and design today and how such endeavours might configure incompossible futures. Ascott developed the Groundcourse as a cybernetic art curriculum that encouraged students to reconceive the future through existential speculation and play (Sloan, 2019). Though Ascott’s curriculum met with resistance that led to an early dismissal (Shanken, 2003), the questions Ascott posited then, remain relevant today. Cultivating divergent possibilities within structured frameworks, Ascott’s pedagogical vision embodied a radical concept of plurality. His students explored alternative perspectives through behavioural projects, calibration exercises, and mind-mapping techniques that encouraged them to envision multiple futures (Sloan, 2019). These methods were not merely instructional but transformative, challenging students to develop approaches to knowing that maintain the openness of the future as possibly contradictory rather than collapsing possibilities into predetermined paths.

Beschreibung:Heat pumps are necessary for energy transitions in Europe. However, in everyday life in households, heat pumps, are often not used as intended by technology developers. This discrepancy presents a challenge for heat pump supply side actors such a manufacturers and resellers. This study introduces a design perspective on unintended use, framing it as a form of improvisation to which supply side actors might respond. We employed a sensitizing video and conducted semi-structured interviews with nine professionals in the Dutch heat pump value network to examine their responses to improvisation and identify the factors influencing the choice of response. We find ten different responses and nine motivating factors. We then highlight areas where socio-technical innovations could contribute to new relations between the heat pump supply side and use.

Beschreibung:As intelligent things are becoming commonplace in our households, there is a tremendous drive to have human-like conversations with them. Through future visions, we become prepared and accustomed to verbally command a lamp to turn on, a kettle to boil water, or to summon a car to the driveway. Yet, it requires individuals to interact not directly with the things themselves, but rather mediated by AI voice interfaces such as Amazon Alexa, Apple’s Siri or Google Home, otherwise known as conversational agents (CA). These allow people to control their smart and connected appliances but also entertain them with their ability to whisper (Parviainen & Sondergaard, 2020), joke and even flirt (Bergen, 2016), opening up an unprecedented space of more-than-human social interactions. However, these emerging voice interactions are limited by the extent of conversations they make possible with intelligent things in the home. As Reeves et al.(2018) argue “calling interactions with voice interface conversational is perhaps a confusion” as they actually are limited to sequences of requests and responses, where things are reduced to their mere functionality and used in a human-centric dimension. Current CAs appear to share the faith of many technological innovations employing a type of human-centred perspective focusing on utilitarian aspects of interaction that may constrain our capacity to explore the possible nuances of emerging relationships between humans and things (ref). Beschreibung:Domestic heating systems need to change to meet climate targets. This paper contributes to a new understanding of the effects of introducing new and efficient heating technologies on everyday life within the household and beyond. We draw from the field of practice-oriented design research where disruptions are conceptualized as potential sites of innovation. This paper then reports on an ethnographic study of the disruptions and consequent reconfigurations that occur in households when new heating technologies are introduced. Our findings show a variety of reconfigurations and a potential role for further impact of these innovations-in-waiting. We also find that reconfigurations in household practices are related to, and might impact, other practices including professional ones. We discuss our findings with reference to the role of policy, technology developers and households, and conclude that there is further potential for innovative practice reconfigurations to contribute to sustainability transitions.
